Iphone 3G Updating question

I have an Iphone 3G that up until recently I've been very happy with, but starting about the time I updated to OS4, it's been giving me some problems. Perhaps it's not related, maybe there's something else going on, but I'm wondering if the OS4 system is maybe just a little too much for the 3G (I know some features of OS4 do NOT work on the 3G for example.)

So I know I can go into Itunes and restore it to factory defaults, but I would like to have all the updates PRIOR to OS4. Does anyone know that if I do that, will it give me option to pick and choose the updates, or is it just going to give me 4.01 (or whatever the latest update was)?

I haven't been that impressed with IOS4 on the 3G either. I read some advice on facebook from a former employer who had lots of problems and that she'd read elsewhere.

Backup your iPhone completely.

Perform a factory reset which will wipe everything.

Reload from backup.

Not all of your apps will be included with the backup but they will be downloaded and re-installed.

I found that is did woneders for my 3G which was slow and apps would crash frequently.

Then there's a 4.0.1 update as well.

Apple does not allow you to downgrade the OS. There are workarounds but they seem pretty convoluted to me. Do a google search for "downgrade iphone os" and that should get you some advice.
