iPad Version 3 - Speculations

So, now that the iPad 2 has been announced and is a known quantity as far as specs go, let's go a step further and peer into the crystal ball.

What did Apple and the gang hold back for Version 3? What will we see and when?

Here are my guesses:

Retina Display (Double that of the iPad2)
Wireless syncing over WiFi
32, 64, and 128 GB flash storage
16:9 Aspect Ratio

I think Version 3 will drop in Sept at the next iPod event.

What about you?

Unlike everyone else, I don't see Apple changing the iPad refresh date. I don't think iPad 3 will hit until March of 2012. Having said that, an updated iPad 2 could hit in September. Apple likes having the iPad & iPhone at separate refresh times, ensures big influx of money in separate times and it bolsters post Christmas and iPhone.

As to specs on iPad 3

I too see a better display, but not retina.
A slightly better CPU and Graphics chip
1 gb Ram
128 gb of memory

I think that the main reason I am guessing retina display and 16:9 is that I see the iPad2 really taking off as a HTPC/Streaming device, especially with the HDMI out. I think it will coopt some of the functions of the ATV2, and the inability to get apps on the AppleTV won't matter so much once you can use the apps on your iPad2 and Airplay it or HDMI it to your HDTV.

People are already complaining about the 4:3 AR, and I think Apple will address it, especially since they made the point that the iPad2 can output 1080p (but what about those who want to watch native resolution on the device?)

I would like to see an SD slot too... but that makes too much sense. We will probably see a little more screen resolution, a little more memory... a little faster... and the HDMI port might actually output 720p.

And would be too convenient, I'd guess. ;)
But then, no one needs what an Apple product lacks anyway... ;)

(Before anyone blows a gasket: that was a joke.)

I was really surprised when Apple put SD card into the MacBook Pros. It took several years for that to happen. I don't think that Apple will ever put an SD card slot into an iPad and I personally don't think it needs it. I have tge camera adapter, if I need to capture photos, I use it. I used Dropbox for moving things between my Mac Pro, MacBook pro and iPad.

They don't have SD card slots because that would undermine Apple's absurd tiered pricing for memory capacity. Why pay $200 extra for the 64gb version when you can get SDHC cards for a fraction of the price? ...oh yeah, no SD slot.

Even if apple does eventually cave and add SD card support for iPad, they will screw it up and make the card stick out like it does on the Macbook Pro.

They don't want to cut into the "legendary" iPad battery life.

But, about SD or USB, I really don't care. 15 million people or so seem to be able to use the thing fine without it.

That's nonsensical reasoning. Why add anything to future versions, including your earlier guesses, if people are using the current one just fine?

Well, it looks like a glass-top stove, so maybe the iPad3 should have a hotplate. You can fry an egg for breakfast while checking your email in the morning. :techman:

The problem with 16:9 is it's great for video but it's stupid for anything else. Typing on a 16:9 in landscape would present a hideous line length. It would look silly too.

The ATV2 does have apps, of a sort. Recently Apple added some for sports: now fans can watch live games for basketball (NBA League Pass) and baseball (MLB.TV) on the ATV.

I doubt USB, and SD slots (never), but I wouldn't be surprised if at some time (be it 3rd gen or later, that they put the new port for Thurderbolt. Since its a tech that apple is pushing for its bright shinning new products putting it on iPads would certainly help.

I agree on the Retina display but there's no way it's coming until this time next year. That's just how Apple works and it's not going to cannibalize their iPad 2 sales until everyone who is getting one has one.

The way I see it:

Retina Display
Improved Graphics to handle the improved display
iPhone 5(?) quality cameras front and back (aka 720p Facetime and 5MP Still Photos)
32/64/128GB Storage
768MB or 1GB Ram

I think the iPad 3 will definitely have a retina display.

If it also has 16x9, I might even buy one. I wouldn't buy an iPad that didn't (without 16x9, it wouldn't be enough of an upgrade from my existing unit). I mean, why wouldn't a future iPad have 16x9? All displays are in that ratio now. On iMacs, laptops, and of course TVs. Why should the iPad be any different?
