We don’t think that there is anything inherently flawed at all with the soul that Star Trek has laid down. And we feel that if we can tap back into that soul, then it can actually be those things. Not only do we want to please the fans, and we are confident that we will have a movie that fans see in a certain way where their knowledge of canon is not wasted and is part of their enjoyment of the movie, but simultaneously the story has been developed so that it is also an introduction for someone who is not a fan or even someone who knows nothing about Trek or think’s it is dead. We think that it can be that because we think that the bones of the house are right and all it needs is some redecorating.

I think for all of us it is firstly the relationships. And that doesn’t mean everybody gets along. I agree with what J.J. has said: "it is about unbelievably impossible situations being forced upon a group of people who have to look beyond their differences to face the impossible." In a way everyone life has that sort of element to it. We all get through our difficult times with a little help from our friends. It is also what [Leonard] Nimoy said: ‘It is about different people facing the same direction in the face of events they cannot control." That was extremely relevant in the cold war and the sixties and it is as relevant now.

They're still saying all the right things. What a difference from the Berman & Braga era, where every quote made me gnash my teeth in rage and frustration at how frakkin off base they were... :D

I'm encouraged that they aren't bragging about really cool offroading scenes.

I'm also really encouraged that they're talking the way they are. It's about the people and they way they work together to overcome problems, not how they're going to disable the illudium T-38 explosive space modulator the borg placed on their ship at the behest of Captain Braxton who is really working for section 38, the elite corp of officers from Section 31, with a cameo from Major Kira and Nog as an ensign because he fell through a micro-quantum wormhole.

Love this part:

TrekMovie.com: So have you seen it all, every episode of every series and every movie?

Roberto Orci: Yep, well actually not all I haven’t seen all of the Animated Series yet.

Yes, that's the correct Trek geek answer.

And it's VERY encouraging that not only has he read Diane Duane's Spock's World but considers it one of his favorites. I don't think we have anything to worry about in regards to how Spock will be written. But I wonder if he'll accept Duane's semi-explanation from the book for why Romulans don't have Vulcan-like mental powers?

"Spock's World" and its cousin (haha!) "The Romulan Way" are my favorite Trek fiction so I found that highly encouraging.

While these interviews have reaffirmed my faith in the new team to some degree, I still have some concerns.

The
“solution we have for maintaining canon while liberating us is inherently part of what the story is”
line seems to give some credence to the rumored Romulans playing with time story.

I think most people have had enough of time travel, and want a proper “Star Trek”. Travel through the stars, don’t travel through time!

Also recasting everybody is a concerns - Kirk, Spock, McCoy and Scotty is enough to establish in the first movie. With just those you can show Kirk coming aboard as Captain for the first time. McCoy and Scott may not be department chiefs, McCoy a junior doctor, with Piper still there, and Scott an assistant engineer.

You could tell a straight forward first mission story, showing how the relationships between these characters came to developed without the need to violate, or take “liberties” with any canon.

I understand fully that the this film needs to appeal to as wide an audience as possible. Personally i think a “Captains Kirk’s First Mission” film will appeal more than a “Romulans change the timeline and Spock has to stop it” film.

I have a feeling it will be both. Although I think the time travl part will be the more minor aspect.

I don't see how Time Travel that effects the entire time line can be a "minor aspect".

Because it can happen in the first ten minutes and then there will be 110 minutes of plot in the new time line.

I'd rather they just come out and say "We're doing a reboot" than put something like that in to justify why things are a little different.

Either do a complete reboot, or do a movie thats works within and fills in a few blanks in canon.

Putting in a time travel story into a movie that then goes on to ignore that story is stupid.

I'm anti-reboot generally, but I'd be able to accept easier than a hodgepodge of somethings being the same and others different.

good to see...reassuring.

though some in the crowd are going to gnash teeth about the "relationships" bit. Me, I always agreed.
