Interesting interview with Robbie McNeil

If TPTB really thought "the ship was the star" it begins to explain some of Voyager's problems.

Did anyone really care about the ship itself?

That explains a lot. No surprise then that they didn't care about the characters.

Isn't it sad? They had the best characters in any Star Trek series and the best premise for the series itself and the characters themselves-and they wasted it!

When they're low on Deuterium, the lighting gets turned down and everyone sits in the dark - how much more emo can you get?

So, a starship needs: Dilithium. Deuterium. Anti-matter. Warp plasma (would that be the matter for the am/m reaction?). Warp coils. Warp core. Plasma manifolds.

Is that overly complicated? Or would that be normal relative to a modern tactical ship?

Normal.
I mean, think about what you need just to run your car.
Petrol.
Oil.
Water.
Wiper Fluid.
Air in the tyres

And that's just what you need to put in it. I'm not even including the engine and components which the warp core, coils and manifolds you mentioned would be.

I like the fact that he's grateful for his opportunities on Star Trek for showing him both the right and wrong ways to run a show buisness.

I'm also glad that he and Roxann continued in their directing/producing careers after Voyager. :techman:

Now... if ONE or BOTH of them could find a way to bring a fresh Star Trek back to the small screen.... ;)

The first thought, that went through my head, was- if Robert Beltran has said this, he would have been killed by the Voyagerfans. ;)

OK, thanks. For some reason I can only remember TOS talking about dilithium this, dilithium that, like there is nothing else under the sun (or above it) that powers a warp... drive.

Ahh, but that is the "difference".

Robbie thought this, but didn't parade it during the show, and DESPITE thinking this, he's also very grateful for his opportunities both as the actor and the director working on the show.

But the writers gave McNeill lots of things to do. They didn't do the same for Beltran.

Season 4 was chuck FULL of Chakotay. Despite the ascendance of Seven... he had more to do in that season than in most, and I suspect that was because they were limited in their B'Elanna stories.

(The chick was pregnant.)

Please be aware, I love the character of Chakotay, and wish more was done for him, but part of that has to also fall on the shoulders of the actor.

The EMH had the least lines in the 2 part pilot, and NEELIX was picked prelaunch to be the breakout character a'la Data and Odo... but Picardo the actor lit the imagination of the writers and teased them into writing more for him such that by season 7 he was getting the most story lines (or tied with Seven)

Now compare this to Beltran's perceived tactic of publically hitting the writers over the head for writing less for Chakotay in the last 3 seasons, which didn't cause them to reward him by writing more.

I still think the idea that the SHIP was the star is shortsighted.

The only ship that I MOURNED was when the "original" Enterprise went into the atmosphere and burned up in the third movie.

Since then, its only been about the people who drive the shiny new wheels... er.. fly the shiny new ships.

I think if TPTB in the last 2 series forgot about that, it explains a lot re: what happened to the franchise.

Even in the reboot... I got the feeling the PEOPLE were first and foremost.

Here's to hoping that commitment continues.

:bolian:

Thinking the ship is the star is about as successful as believing that a bunch of explosions and battles can replace a plot. ;)
