No disrespect intended for the good work those three did for Trek, but looking at that picture, wouldn't you think Star Trek could use some revitalization?

Yes. And it's time for the "purists" to shed their pedantic views of what Trek "should" be.

A revitalization should be a welcome change for any forward thinking fan.

^ Of course you realize that's a fan made production so it doesn't count.

That doesn't change my opinion in the least. It only strengthens my view.

How many "fans" will declare that Trek XI "doesn't count" if they don't see exactly what they want up on that screen?

Any movie or TV series made by Paramount "counts" since they are the keepers of the flame. Fan made productions are unauthorized, and even though they have the best of intentions, they are generally quite bad.

I agree however that Star Trek needs new life.

well, Walter could use a taylor to make his uniform fit him better.

I absolutely welcome a revitalization but, to be fair, we must also acknowledge that not all revitalizations are well-executed, and I think a lot of the fear from the purists is based on concerns that the revitalization could be bungled. Which, of course, it can be.

That's what I was thinking. I've seen better fitting Halloween costumes. ;)

It's crucially vital for fans to realize the need to revitalize Trek at this crucial juncture when Trek could use some new vitality. It is also vital that the people doing it undertand that it's crucial to do it well while respecting and appreciating all the energy and vitality of those who came before as they give their own new energy to this importantly crucial piece of legendary sci fi. This vitality the new give will create synergy with the crucial aspects of the old they keep. And a newly revitalized Trek will then continue to be a vitally crucial part of sci fi entertainment for years to come.

I have several ST fanzines and newszines here from 1980 that contain angry articles that go to great lengths to explain that ST:TMP "doesn't count". ;)

At the time, many fans were claiming that TMP happened in an alternate universe. Then, a few years later, they were trying to make the rumoured death of Spock also part of an alternate reality.

...and even though they [fan films] have the best of intentions, they are generally quite bad.

Perhaps. To be fair, though, the same is true of about ninety percent of the professionally created skiffy films and tv shows that are hotly debated and praised on the Internet.

Exactly the point sir... I remember those days..and how the more rabid fans sounded like die-hard Nixon supporters..seems rather tragic to me now...

Of course the franchise needs a good jump-start..Wesley's 35 now...and those old Berman stories now are showing thier age as well...

My thoughts to those "purists" are simply "adapt or die"...

I hate the word synergy.

Then I guess you're not a very proactive person, are you? :p

I hate the word proactive.

Doable, maybe? ;)

The evolution of the English language in the TOS era (perhaps as Abrams will do it):
Kirk: Scotty, I need you to be proactive and get us warp drive.
Scott: But Captain, it's not doable!
Spock: Mr. Scott, if you create a synergy between the dilithium in reserve and the antimatter already in the warp core, the problem is doable.
Scott: Aye, Mr. Spock. That may just be doable. I'll task someone to get right on it.

[Sorry, way off thread. I'm done.]
