Inspirational Music Mix...

Dunno about 'inspirational'; when I'm down (like really down) I usually want to listen to things that embrace my 'down'; Nebraska is the perfect example. Jazz Samba -on the other hand- has a tendency to make me love life and whatever happens in it a lot more when I'm 'up'.

Showing my age with 'albums' rather than 'playlists'???

Some music I find genuinely inspirational:

Marvin Gaye's What's Going On? (pretty much any track from that album)

Gorecki's Symphony No 3.

Shostakovich's Symphony No 13 (tackles anti-semitism, political dissent, fascist oppression and self-serving bureaucracy. Genuine 20th century masterwork).

Songs to avoid:

Gloomy Sunday
Is That All There Is?

I'm loving your threads right now, HaventGotALife!

I'm like, trekkiedane in that, when I'm sad, I tend to luxuriate in my depression with playlists of gloom. When I need a motivational reality check, though, my number one song is now and has always been "Stand" by R.E.M.

I'd put that with my top ten most influential songs, but we probably have enough threads of that sort going now!

Other "inspirational" songs for me are the following, and I've linked a few because they are awesome and people should listen to them!

"Whole Wide World" - Wreckless Eric: Makes me think maybe I will find love.

"Beautiful Ones - Suede: Puts me in the mood for living.

"Wig in a Box and "Midnight Radio" from Hedwig and the Angry Inch: Make me passionate.

[yt]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZynpwOfEOSM[/yt]

"Not Perfect" - Tim Minchin: Gives me feels.

Music in general inspires me, whether creatively to get me more productive, physically to get me energised, or emotionally to lift my mood. While some music does get me down in the dumps, for the most part music from different sources never fails to do all of the above things and more.

Not an exhaustive list, but the following pieces of music have always left me feeling good. (Those that know me well probably know much of this already ;))

"I Want To Hold Your Hand" - The Beatles
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3MHkgwA8t-g
It's probably the most genuinely optimistic song that the Beatles ever made. It always puts a smile on my face.

"Faster" - Manic Street Preachers
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rl2Jv4dzFqg
The best song to play if you want to get somewhere quickly and decisively. :)

"Pet Sounds" - The Beach Boys
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rZKMZnVjfxo
A good song for contemplation and thinking.

"I Wanna Be Like You" - from The Jungle Book
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9JDzlhW3XTM
As British DJ Chris Evans once remarked, a great song to paint your wall to on a Saturday afternoon. I agree.

"Flying" - Secret Machines
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gpQxUvjTiik
One of my favourite Beatles covers, a great recording to completely zone out to and forget the troubles of the universe.

"Theme One" - George Martin and his Orchestra
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dGMhK7WrxL4
Another "zone-out" track.

"Twilight" - Electric Light Orchestra
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rzy1RNJBUo4
Obviously. :D

"Sadness Is A Blessing" - Lykke Li
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xu-b3u5jDiU
Because it's all right to feel sad sometimes. And it's "happy" for deep people. :p

"A Design For Life (Stealth Sonic Orchestra instrumental)" - Manic Street Preachers
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3YOgSCUEuzQ
For those moments of anticipation.

"The Fallen" - Franz Ferdinand
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rLkdkMst8j8
The song that gets me in the mood for a big event or night out.

"Get Dancin'" - Disco Tex and his Sex-O-Lettes
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KD6PqT3LjQk
The most joyous disco song ever made. Ever.

Some surprisingly good songs with a good tempo to work out to in the gym (mostly 80s songs as it turns out, no laughing at the back please :p):

Also, some classical music pieces that really inspire me for whatever reason or the other:
"Ma Vlast II: Vltava (Die Moldau)" - Bedrich Smetana.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kdtLuyWuPDs
An emotional rollercoaster of a piece.

"Bolero" - Maurice Ravel
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LWcpw3GAAms
A piece of music I often play as my train arrives home. :)

"Rhapsody on a theme of Paganini" - Sergei Rachmaninoff
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-OLUEj6noEg
It's the entire gamut of humanity in 24 variations.

"Symphony no. 5: Finale" - Jean Sibelius
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vjd37i4v78E
Because the universe is just awesome.

And Antonin Dvorak's "Slavonic Dances." Any of them. All of them. They all make me laugh, cry, and shout out in joy.

And a few reassuring mashups that tell me that everything is going to be all right after all:

[yt]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6hgU3tP4qwY[/yt]

[yt]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cYQJ_SIVUVE[/yt]

[yt]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iNzrwh2Z2hQ[/yt]

So basically...

Sorry to bump and double post after a week, but I heard this song today. Goodness knows we all could do with it in these uncertain times.

And it's just appeared on a TV advert just now. My superpower of summoning songs by merely thinking about them continues. :p
