Ingredients for a successful fanfic?

1..An actual plot, not just X and Y talk about stuff.
1a. A plan. Sixty chapters on a work in progress tells me that the story is wandering around lost in the desert.
2. Good characterizations. OCs are interesting and 3 dimensional; established characters are recognizable -- as in the author has watched the shows enough to internalize the way the character speaks, moves, etc.

Essentially, I just want to read a good story, told well.

Why are people bitching at each other so much in here?

Anyway thanks for all the feedback guys I'm working on a fanfic of my own at the moment so I'll try and take on board the advice that has been given! :)
