Used to be that when those filthy race cars descended on Toronto for the big Indy car rally – whether sponsored by Molson or anybody else – the stands were rammed and the vendors, the bars and the organizers themselves made a ton of dough. Not this year, however.
The stands were sparsely populated, the hot dog vendors were flipping the goodies for no one in particular and the bars were barren. Time for the Indy to pack it in, don't you think?
You could argue that this year was an anomaly – there being a recession and all. People are definitely hanging on to their cash, as evidenced by the fact that the Indy's aesthetic opposite, the women-centred Lilith Fair tour, is also in deep trouble this summer.
But then again Torontonians welcomed Lady Gaga more than once and, weather permitting, you can count on the stands to be packed for the Canadian Open golf tourney, slated for this weekend at St George's Golf and Country Club over on Islington.
Personally, I can't wait to see the Indy leave town for good.
