In today's local paper there was an article talking about how in pre-screening and post-release viewings of the movie there seemed to be an age disparity between those who liked the movie "Inception" and those who didn't get it.

The idea seemed to be that younger people who're more "open minded" about abstract concepts "got it" more and the article even suggests that younger viewers, and games, "get" the "levels" aspects and such more. Older viewers, perhaps a bit more rigid in the philosophy views and less prone to more abstract thoughts and ideas were less likely to get it.

So a simple poll question. How old are you and did you like the movie? For the purposes of what we'll consider to be "old" and "young" I'm going to set a mid-line age of 35 as the "middle point" between old and young. Why 35? Because it's half-way to 70 which I'll presume to be the "mean life expectancy" for a movie viewer and I had to put it somewhere.

Re: Inception. Like vs. Age

25, loved it and got everything right away (because it's not complicated!).

Re: Inception. Like vs. Age

I'm 29- liked the movie and had no problem following it... as did my 34 year old brother.

We saw it with our 58 year old father, who liked it but commented, "I haven't been this confused since The Matrix."

Re: Inception. Like vs. Age

I'm 18 and I got it fine, though I still believe that the entire film was a dream regardless of the totems.

Re: Inception. Like vs. Age

Based on some of the comments in the grading thread, it seemed like a lot of older people loved the movie simply because they paid attention to the linear and obvious storyline, while a lot of younger ADD people didn't like it because were too busy texting and talking or were expecting a Michael Bay type of movie.

On a side note, while I'm personally under 35, why did you leave no option for those over 35 to say they liked it?

Re: Inception. Like vs. Age

I'm 26, and would give it a B+ on a letter grade scale. It was a thought-out, clever film, but wasn't particularly emotionally involving, nor creatively astounding like The Matrix. It was good, but not great (and not at all difficult to follow). The shifting gravity effects were excellent, though.

Re: Inception. Like vs. Age

My friend's dad, who is 55, saw it and didn't like it. He said he doesn't like when movies make him think since he goes to movies for escapism. He also liked The Last Airbender over Inception, so...

I think it's more like, younger people haven't seen a whole lot of movies that cover the same ground, so they tend to be easily impressed and conned into thinking a film is profound or mind-blowing, when it's really just a well executed popcorn flick that deals with concepts handled better elsewhere. When I watched Inception, I saw a lot of echoes of other movies like The Matrix, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, The Waking Life, and to me it didn't really top any of those films.

Also, as someone who's 35, your poll makes no sense. How should I choose between "35 or younger - Neutral to the movie" and "35 or older - Netural [sic] to the movie"?

Re: Inception. Like vs. Age

I'm 40 and I liked it. It's not particularly hard to follow. If I had to guess, I'd say the article had things backwards. Older people probably got the movie better because they tend to pay more attention while watching. They might not have liked it as much because ultimately it's only a movie that SEEMS to be deep.

THIS THREAD IS THE NEW ONE WITH A CORRECTED POLL.

Hey, I take offense to that. I saw it at the drive-ins with my girlfriend and neither of us were texting or talking!

She had her mouth full.

;)

I voted 35 or younger (I'm 30) and got it. Loved "Inception" and the themes it explored along with it being an analogy or metaphor (not sure which is the correct term lol) for Nolan's own film career and the film making process. Kind of like "Inglorious Basterds" seem to be a homage from QT on cinema...specially the early years of cinema. As a recent article I read pointed out "Inception" was a good book end to last years IB. Should also point out that the film does an excellent job of explaining things if you payed attention you should have been able to get it. Both my friends did and most other times I have to sometimes explain things to them so that pleased me.
