In need of advice for man gift

BennieGamali

So, my man loves containers. I bought him one I know he loves. A glass carafe with a wooden ball as a stopper.
It's a fairly ok gift, but I want to make it a little more personal so I am etching something into the bottle.

There are some things he loves
The horde, Orcs, Anchorman, His dog
Various other games like LoL, DotA, Pokemon, Zelda, Civilizations etc

I'm most keen on making something from WoW since we met on WoW.

1. I was thinking about going for the horde symbol, very small ones all over the carafe. This is going to be the easiest, and less chance of making some dumb mistake.

2. I was thinking of making it a "warlords of draenor" themed thing, seeing as the expansion will be out in not too long. I would use this picture for inspiration.

3 I might try to make one with Mannoroth and Grom Hellscream, since he has said some times that the scene where Grom kills Mannoroth is the only "movie" thing that has ever almost made him cry, which means he loved it.

4. Some sort of LOL or DOTA thing... No idea what i'd do.

5. We're both studying IT and programming, so mayeb some romantic piece of code? He would think it was funny. I would rather try to make him something he would love though..

Anyone with any other ideas? Opinions? I am really not sure what to go with. He's no Trek fan, so unfortunately I can't do any awesome klingon stuff.

Here are two examples of glass etchings I've done so far. I'll need some practice before doing the karafe.

I have absolutely no knowledge of WOW, but I think that the first image you posted would look cool. It's very clean and would be easy to make out. I think it would look great etched on the carafe.

^^^I second this notion...What she said!

I like option one too.

I'll vote for Number 1 as well. Simple design, and could still accent room decor without screaming "gamer!" to those unfamiliar with Warcraft.

I think #2 would be cool if you could pull it off. Do you have time to redo it if it doesn't turn out?

It's impossible to redo etchings, you use corrosive cream to etch things into the glass, so I only have one go at it. Or well.. I would etch the orcs individualy. But only one go for each.

I like the horde symbol idea a lot. I could try orcs on the glasses I make for it.

Thanks for the advice guys!

I thought of it, but the shape of the carafe would make it look a bit silly.
It looks a lot like this one, (might actually be the same one):

I'd do the little horde symbols as they are easiest to do.
Did you just practize etching flat items? Something round is quite a different beast since the hydrofluoric acid used for the etching will not stay in place but do its best to run off the curved surface.

How about etching one medium-sized pic onto the bottom of the carafe? It might possibly create an interesting optical effect when the carafe is filled.

I'm practicing on various shapes and types of glass. I' making it a hobby, it's more fun than just drawing or panting on paper. In the end I'll get glass paint and a pen for glass.

Awesome carafe!

Not sure if my idea would work on it though:

Etch the characters in that 'warlords of draenor' image on one 'side' of the carafe and a big stylized sun on the opposing side... the view through would add depth and colour (of whatever liquid was in it) to the decoration.
