I'm tempted... what would you do?

I've got a Playstation 3 and a stand-alone HD-DVD player here at home.
Since BD won the format war I decided to wait for the eventual release of TOS Remastered on BD.
But now I found the HD-DVD/DVD set of season 1 at Amazon for less than half the original price and I must say, I`m getting close to changing my mind and getting it now in HD.
Should I cave in and enjoy the HD-DVDs as long as my player keeps working?
Additionally I know that seasons 2 and 3 won't be released on that format so there will never be a coherent collection of the whole show if I get it now.
But the urge is so strong. Please advice!

The satisfaction of quenching the urge to buy now will pale in comparison to the daily irritation of a non-coherent collection. You will get the urge to rebuy season 1 in BD, thus finally turning your HDDVDs into high-priced coasters. At least that's the scenario I envision if I were in your place :)

Seriously, I wouldn't do it. The odd movie on sale? Sure. But an entire tv season with more to come? Never.

For me it would all come down to the price. Even "less than half" of the original is still much more than I would pay, but your mileage may vary.

I think the threshhold for me is: does the cost fall into the range of what I'd expect to pay for a permanent part of my library (like another TV season set), or is it in the range of something I'd pay for a one-shot bit of entertainment (like going out to lunch once or seeing a movie)?

$20 and up would be too much for me, for all the reasons that Hardin notes. But if I found it for $10? Absolutely.

I would say no. Wait until they are all out on BR and amazon does an awesome sale, like the one they're running right now. Having a coherent collection will certainly be worth the wait for you.

And on a side note - why would any buy season 2 in standard format? The entire point of the new visuals was so that the episodes would hold up better in HD!

About $100 is probably as low as it will go until the last few dregs are sold. Anything below that has got to be under cost.

I spent more than that on my copy of Star Trek on HD DVD and I'm still pleased.

Yeah, I was able to get the first season HD on sale used plus another 40% off using a coupon and then a further 10% off with a loyalty card discount and now I'm really feeling burned. I will probably not get the remastered standard DVD sets and just wait for the Blu-ray release in a couple of years.

I would wait. 1 of the reasons for HD-DVD is that it's unlikely anyone will support it.

i saw a Floor Model HD-DVD player at Wal-Mart for 79.00 last night. I turned it down, because I remember Beta from the 1980's. HD-DVD=Beta, IMHO!

No doubt about it, as a guy who owns a working Betamax. But another analogy is day old bread. If it's cheap enough, it's worth it. It's weird to think of a high definition ten disc DVD set as a disposable object, but it can be. For the OP, he can get the set today for under $100. That is not a bad price. And using other deals, he might be able to knock some off of that. If you already own the player, at what price is the set a disposable object?

Deep Discount is the one I don't get. They have Star Trek Remastered for $142. Huh? I bought it from Deep Discount for under $108 when it came out. They have a lot of discs in the $10-15 range, and I've bought more than a few of them, but most of HD DVD titles are still relatively expensive. They're also getting older by the day.

I just want to know where the abbreviation "BD" comes from, and exactly what it really means.

As with all these things, waiting will get you a lower price and possibly a better product. If you want it now and can afford it, go ahead and get it now. If you have then in another format, which I assume you likely do, and can hold out, wait a bit.

As an owner of the entire set of two-episodes-per-disc DVDs, I've already spent more than enough money on the original Trek. For me to buy the show -- remastered or otherwise -- in a next-gen DVD format, each season would have to be priced at $30 or less.

And the player would have to be priced at $150 or less.

Why exactly did they release two episodes per DVD instead of four? Was DVD storage capacity smaller? Or did Paramount just want to make some extra cash?

That's just how they did shows when they first went to DVD.

I spend as much as I'm spending on Trek. As long as my DVD player works and I can play my DVDs, I won't buy upgrades. I have TOS in the double-episode sets and the rest in season sets. 'Tis good enough.

Honestly? I'd wait and hold out a little longer. I know the urge. Trust me. I have trouble passing up DVD sets and collectibles when I know I have the spare pocket cash to get them, but I also try to take practicality into consideration. I'd wait.
