I'm new to the iPod. Have a question.

Yeah, I'm behind on the latest music tech, I know, but I got a iPod nano as a gift and want to know if I can take tracks off of my CDs and put'em on my ipod. I would assume I put my CD into my laptop and load the track/file onto the ipod, right? Any help is appreciated.

apple's proprietary music library and purchasing software should have the functionality you're looking for

I don't have an iPod, but I would assume you need to rip the music onto your harddrive first.

I'm not real clear on what you're saying. Is this something I have to buy or do I get it free because I have an iPod? And you're saying that the software will allow me to take tracks off of CDs I already own and move the tracks I want to the iPod?

You can download iTunes for free. You can then use it to transfer music from one source to another.

Yeah, simply put, upload your music to your computer, put it in iTunes (you can even rip the songs from the CD to your computer into iTunes to make it even easier). Then plug in your iPod and you can download your songs to it.

The quoted poster appears to be making some sort of side-swipe against Apple and what he probably perceives to be monopolistic business practices with regards to how they operate their store and their players.

But, basically, iTunes can rip CDs and then send the music right to your iPod.

Also, since we won the war on DRM, and most major music stores have now gotten rid of it (including Apple), you can go and buy MP3s nearly anywhere (like the Amazon.com music store) and whack 'em straight on. Likewise iTunes DRM-free tracks (the vast majority) can now be played on other music players.

Just be sure to choose whether you want to use AAC (MP4) format or MP3. Use the latter if you also want to ensure you can use your music tracks elsewhere as the mp4a format Apple will encode to doesn't work everywhere.

I'd also go for a minimum bitrate of 192kbps or 256kbps for the best quality playback.

The straightforward answer is, you download the Apple iTunes program. When you put your CD in, hit the "import from CD" button. That will load the songs into your library. Plug your iPod into the USB port. Then either "sync" (if you want your iPod to mirror your library) or drag the songs you want to the iPod. Easy.
