Actually, this has more to do with the driver in question being an ass hole than being old, but he was old, so I'm blaming that. He was in his mid- to late 60s, not really that old, but I'm going somewhere with this.
Half an hour ago, I was leaving a department store parking lot. Thanks to the popularity of minivans and SUVs, and me in my little Honda Civic, most times I have a much bigger vehicle on either side. The only option when backing out of a space is to do it slowly and hope the people driving in the isle are paying attention.
So, I've backed halfway out of the space, and this guy in an SUV slams on his brakes and stops about ten feet short of my car. If you have to slam on your brakes to avoid a car pulling out of a space in a parking lot, you're going way too fast.
He stays where he's at for a few seconds, so i continue backing out of the space. He lifts his foot off the brake and begins moving forward, pretty much saying "Pull back into the space or I'll hit you." Since he didn't give me an option, I put my car in drive and pull back into the space. I also turn around in my seat and flip him off for good measure. When he sees my hand and the finger I'm displaying proudly, he stops, blocking me in the space, and gets out of his car.
So, I also get out of my car. If he's about to do something stupid, I don't want to be trapped.
"I had the right-of-way, ass hole," he said.
"Doesn't matter," I replied, "I was halfway out of my space, and would have been all the way out if you weren't going 40. Also, you didn't continue on your way until I started moving again even though I gave you the chance. Regardless of who had the right-of-way, you failed to yield." I don't know if that's exactly true or not, but it made enough sense to justify the situation.
"You young people need to learn some respect, " he said, "I'm carrying a concealed weapon, so you should shut up and get back in your car." Wait, what!
"I know you're upset," I said, "so I'll ignore that threat for now. However, are you really going to draw your weapon? Are you really going to risk having your CCW revoked and going to jail just because some smart-ass kid is giving you a hard time? If so, are you sure you can draw your weapon and fire before I take your gun from you and give you the beating of your life?" I'm not usually this ballsy when someone threatens my life, but I could tell he was just trying to scare me. If he was packing, he was planning on keeping his gun in his holster. He stood there silently. "That's what I thought. Now, I would suggest that you shut up and get back in your car before I call the police.
"You need to learn some respect," he said as he walked back toward his car.
"Respect is earned, not given freely," I said, "Have a nice day." I smiled sarcasticly and waved as he drove off.
Only in Detroit...
As I was typing this post, I changed my mind and called the police. I didn't get his plate number, but I gave them a description of the man, the woman in his pasengar seat, his vehicle, and told them what happened. I believe in giving people a second chance, but someone that is going to make threats every chance they get shouldn't have a CCW.
