And writing the whole Middle Earth saga, what would you use besides a ring for the object of power?

Rings, Swords and Amulets tend to be the rule as far as objects of power go.

The ring works best thematically of the three.

So, I wouldn't.

Am I creating the (not-)Ring of Power prior to writing The Hobbit, thus no longer constraining myself to use a ring because that's the object Bilbo found in Gollum's cave? If so, then I would take the object's creator into account. Sauron was a vain and arrogant individual. I can see him forging a crown or some similar object that would clearly demonstrate his domination of Middle-earth.

It would be a book with a double snake medallion on the front; and much like a perpetual motion machine, it's power would come from a story that never ends...

I'm thinking a '66 Cuda. Instead of finding a ring, Bilbo stumbles across Gollum's underground parking and decides to take the car as a means of catching up w/the dwarves faster.

I like it.

And then during LOTR, they have to tow it into Mordor and dump it into Sauron's car crusher before he finds out. "Sam! It's so heavy, I can't go on!"

They can't just drive it into Mordor because they risk hitting Nazgul speed traps.

LOL, LOTR re-written as an apocalyptic road warrior movie.

"It's the last of the V-8 interceptors, it has to be destroyed before the leader of the highway patrol gets his hands on it.
"

"You've had the interceptor all this time? how come no one found out about it?"

"Well, I only take it out on the occasional weekend to get groceries and I always avoid Sackville"
