If you were going to re-do the 'livery' of TOS...

... what thoughts might you have?

I am considering having a custom model built of the Constitution class (WNMHGB era), but setting it in an alternate universe, at least insofar as the markings go.

In my instance, I am thinking:
United Earth Space Probe Agency Logos
Blue pennants instead of red
Possibly moving the hull numbers and changing the method of doing hull numbers (i.e., a different system)
Ships prefixed UES
Fantail designation

Not sure, at this stage, what other changes I would make... but I am curious about the changes you might make.

You know, I had started on an idea for a different scheme a while back, but I never got much further than this pic:
entmarkingszl3.jpg

This was intended to be the markings for the left side of the secondary hull. I'm really not sure what I'd do with the saucer, but it would have to fit with this.

I would ditch using the hull number format that the UFP uses on their ships (ex. "NCC-1701") and use the format that the USN uses (ex. "1701").

I would also consider not putting the ship name on the hull.

I did a UESPA emblem once. Have to see if I can find a copy of it.

Masao helped me to actualize this UESPA logo a few years back...

I use this as the base for my thinking...

Turning the innards of the UESPA logo, and working in red, as well as adapting it for a UE logo (which I have no idea what I would create) and working in blue, here is my initial test of the secondary hull livery...

Thoughts?

An idea I had pop up in my mind... removing the ship name from the side of the ship, placing it on the fantail, and having the center line of the triple-lined pennant trace all the way back to flank the name on the fantail... I can't really illustrate that, and I am not sure if the lines would work out for that or not.

EDIT - I had a few minutes free, so here is the registry sceme I have developed for my alternate take...

UNITED EARTH SPACE PROBE AGENCY
UNITED EARTH ARMED FORCES
Combined Fleet Starship Types

Class A – Deep Range Explorer
Class B – Deep Range Defender
Class C – Exploratory Cruiser
Class D – Defense Cruiser
Class E – Exploration Scout Ship
Class F – Defense Picket Ship
Class G – Fleet Supply Ship
Class H – Courier Ship
Class I – Exploratory Training Vessel
Class J – Defense Training Vessel
Class K – System Patrol Vessel

Registry Example: UES Constellation – NCC-1017
N = Naval Vessel
C = Commissioned Status
C = Class C Exploratory Cruiser
1017 = Subclass 10, Unit 17

Good stuff.

I like the red. Not so keen on the blue, but that's a personnel preference.
What about working in some of that olive colour from the UESPA into the overall scheme?

Maybe the registry in black and the name in olive. Or vice versa.

Very good stuff. I especially like the UESPA logo and the ship classification and registry system. You've clearly put a lot of thought into this.

Hey Rob! Good to see you back around here! You know I will throw in with ya on this kind of thing..

I definately agree with your thoughts on an Earth-centric force. I am particularly fond of the United Earth Armed Forces concept:

United Earth Space Probe Agency- More or less functioning as the civilian liason between the Armed Forces and the governing body. I envision this agency as being almost thoroughly Earth-centric, right on down to its policies and interests, much to the discomfort of Earth-allied forces and governments.

United Earth Armed Forces

United Earth Navy (The "Star Fleet")
United Earth Marine Corps (Mobile Ground Forces)
United Earth AeroSpace Force (Orbital and System Patrol and Interception)
United Earth Army (The "Land Warriors" and planetary marshalling forces)

I would rather see a vessel registry system which sort of mirrors our current designation systems, such as CA, BB, FF, DD etc. This system could also be extended to any UFP Armed Forces. At any rate, in alternate Trek mode, the Starfleet is referred to only loosely as such (Rather being the Federation Navy).

Edit: Taking another look at your designation scheme, I rather like where your going with that afterall!

Hmm - I'd combine the Marines and the Army to form a unified planetary force, as well as the AeroSpace force with the Navy to form a combined space force, or "Starfleet".

I think it'd be a cool idea to have explorer class ships be Starfleet vessels, but be operated jointly by the military AND UESPA - gold shirts and blue shirts (In The Cage there were no red shirts.) Starfleet would oversee command and operation of the vessel, but UESPA would run all scientific and exploratory operations. The ship would take direction from UESPA headquarters during normal mapping, survey, and exploratory missions, but this can be overruled in times of emergency by Starfleet. This could make for some interesting military/scientist tension.

If I were to totally redo the TOS livery, one thing I'd borrow from ENT is the whole jumpsuit uniform and unit-shoulder-patch thing. If we're talking about a gratuitous remake of TOS, that would make the Enterprise crew more navy-like.

As for a Federation "army", I thought of the concept several years ago, called StarFIREs: Star Fleet Itinerant Regiments and Expeditions. Basically, it's a subsidiary offshoot of Starfleet, which remains the parent organization. It's Starfleet troops with specialized training to deal with planet-based missions. Every starbase and many colonies (like Cestus III) would likely have a StarFIREs contingent, just as World War II aircraft carriers used to carry a contingent of Marines on board.

While in space, the StarFIREs would appear more naval, like ordinary Starfleet. When making planetfall, the StarFIREs would be more like the Sea Bees, with units as companies and battalions, and Petty Officers would become "platoon sergeants". Officer ranks would be a mixture of Starfleet naval and more army-like titles. I think it would be best to avoid having generals. Main Starfleet flag officers would take over high-level administration, much the way the Navy did in the Pacific islands campaigns during WW II. The StarFIREs' uniform appearance would be similar, but noticeably different, than regular Starfleet.
