If you had a light saber...

What will you do with it?

Besides chopping down some trees in my backyard, I'll probably accidentally cut off my own arm or leg within the first hour of playing with that thing.

I really don't think any human being can wield a light saber effectively regardless of training. The fact it cuts through *practically* EVERYTHING will make it an useless personal combat weapon.

Humans seem to be only use lightsabers rudimentary, while it requires mastery of the Force to use it skillfully, otherwise it's just a clumsy weapon. Anyways what would I use it for? Probably as a cutting tool only. I too would most likely chop off a limb or body part using it myself lol.

Of course it would be an effective combat weapon. As you said, it cuts through everything! The biggest problem with it is that the damage it does is pretty much irreversible. You can't just whack somebody over the head with a light saber and expect them to recover.

If I had a saber that means I have awesome cool Jedi mind trick power thingies so obviously I'd quit my day job and be bad ass.

Nerd in me: Go out somewhere remote and find some derelict building or a junkyard and go to town.. optionally dress up as a Jedi or Sith

Capitalist in me: Have it certified and watch the bids by government and corporations roll in and then buy me a tropical island and enjoy life

Prankster in me: Make a Youtube video of me swinging it around Star Wars Kid style and watch the comments explode about this copycat idiot who at least got the SFX right

As to the weapon itself.. it would be the best close combat weapon ever. As said it cuts through everything so there's no possible defense while in range. Opponents fights you with a normal sword you just cut it in half and then stab him and if you know what you're doing aka trained in swordfighting you surely wouldn't whirl any sword around like a maniac.. that's Hollywood and as far from real swordfights as it can get.

That just doesn't make sense. It cutting through everything makes it a dangerous, difficult weapon to wield, but in no way makes it useless. In fact, it makes the opponent's defences (and weapons) irrelevant: you just cut through it. It would be the epitome of "one strike, one kill".

But the fact that it cuts through all defenses work against you as well. Normal swords are double edged, a rapier can only pierce, and a katana is only single edged. With those weapon, it is typical to rest the dull part of the sword very close to your body.

There are two problems with a light saber.

1. Every part of the blade is an edge so you would never dare bring that blade any where close to your body. You will always have to use it with one arm stretched out way in front of you.

2. When you cut through an enemy, you might as well be cutting through air. As a result, if and when you swing fast, there is a good chance that the saber will come back around and wound yourself. Pick up a sword and try a fast slashing motion and you'll know what I mean.

^ As I did say, it would be a difficult, dangerous weapon to wield. It would definitively take some practice to use it properly (but on the other hand, what kind of sword doesn't?). But useless? Hardly.
