I wonder, because what made J.J. Abrams crossover as a feature film director after being a successful TV producer/film screenwriter for a number of years is because Tom Cruise watched season 1 of "Alias" on DVD, loved J.J.'s work and creative vision, and hired him to replace the temperamental Joe Carnahan (director of Narc) to helm Mission: Impossible - III.
Then, this gave J.J. the clout to convince Paramount that he could helm another successful Paramount film franchise, and the studio gladly agreed to give him pretty much free reign to produce and direct another big blockbuster picture.
So, if it was not for Tom Cruise, would we even be having a Star Trek film coming out in the summer of 2009, or would the studio have gone with Rick Berman...or just put Star Trek on the shelves indefinitely like the way it was with the Superman and Batman film franchises for many years?
