If this movie is successful, will TNG & others be forgotten?

Re: If this movie is successful, will TNG & others be forgot

They won't be any more forgotten than they are now. In fact they'll have a chance at being revived, somewhere down the line, if Star Trek is revived. As it is, the chance of that outside of novels is zilch.

Thoughts?

There will be sequels set in whatever universe exists that was setup here.

Yes.

Apparently Paramount has developed technology to be installed in theatres that activates upon the end of the film. This device sends out ultrasonic sounds that affect your brain and wipe out any memories you have of TNG, DS9 and VOY.

But strangely not ENT.

Apparently that one was pretty forgettable on its own.

Re: If this movie is successful, will TNG & others be forgot

If by forgotten you mean that they will not be in future productions then the answer is most likely yes.

Um... four TV series and a bunch of movies? I highly doubt it. Still... it will be interesting what gets air time in the future. What will be rerun in 2009? We shall see. :D

Re: If this movie is successful, will TNG & others be forgot

They already have been forgotten by the general public. That is why they are going back to cultural icons of Kirk and Spock to relaunch the franchise.

I don't think they will be forgotten.

Color me optimistic...but I'm hoping that a successful film will make them even more popular. :)

Look, all the young girls I know (*ahem*) grew up with TNG. And the other reruns. It is part of the TV landscape really. Star Trek is Americana... none of it is going away. trust me. The far right, fascist right, love Trek as much as the loony left.

Everyone has a stake in it.

Never heard it put that way before... I was gonna make a political reply but this isn't the forum. Trek is always more enjoyable when its not partisan... which is as it should be.

^ Oh...I agree that it's not going away. At least as long as there is a wacky gang like this around...and a place for them to congregate.

However, I do hope that this film brings some new fans into the franchise. Some young kids that will keep this franchise vibrant...and out of danger of becoming part of 'the old geezer culture'. :)

Re: If this movie is successful, will TNG & others be forgot

Forgotten, no. If anything this will allow us to tie it all together better. Going from das blinkenlighten to touch-screens and holograms was jarring. Now we'll be able to trace the lineage of the technology better... and hopefully they tell a decent story too this time around.

That should be the tag-line for the new movie. It'll drag people into the theater like a magnet!

Re: If this movie is successful, will TNG & others be forgot

Modern Trek will always be footnote to the original series' legacy when it comes to the franchise's history.

Re: If this movie is successful, will TNG & others be forgot

TNG is the next to get the TOS-R treatment so i'd say nope, the newer shows won't be forgotten for a long time.

* It's true, TNG is gonna get a CGI make-over next *

As it should be? Star Trek went from being a civil rights allegory in the late 60s to a pro war farce in ENTs season three.

So everyone gets a go, partisan wise.

I don't see civil rights as a partisan issue (do you?) nor exclusively the central reason of Star Trek and would even say a large chunk wasn't nearly a allegorical as we might recall. For the most part ToS was balanced when dealing with its subject matter at least more subtle until TNG came around and went all in your face about it (therefore lost its appeal for me) I would say yes none partisan Trek is good Trek.

There wasn't anything exactly "pro war" about Enterprise in my view - of course we likely have different perceptions of what it means to be pro war. I'll leave it at that.

I just don't want Star Trek (or any scifi for that matter) to be about advancing any writers or creators agenda by means of entertainment - no need for Star Trek to be Left or Right propaganda. It just shouldn't rest on a political platform. Whomever is in control of it should be weary of alienating people of varied political slant...

I don't think TNG will be forgotten. The other spin offs might though.

Re: If this movie is successful, will TNG & others be forgot

They'll just reboot TNG with Pierce Brosnan as Picard. :p
