If Shatner had been Unavailable...

If Shatner had been unavailable, what actor of the period would you want as Kirk?

I might be voting for a dark horse candidate, but I would cast Don Matheson. He had a lot of natural authority and stage presence on Land of the Giants, which also showcased his gift for staging fistfights (a Kirk must). He was six-foot-two and well-built, with a deep voice, so he had all the superficial stuff locked down, and I think his persona on LotG would have made a great starship captain. You never doubted that he was a brilliant engineer as well as being a tough guy. He played super-intelligent and macho at the same time, and made it work.

How about this Terrific Trio as a cast swap!

I secound Pernal Roberts.
Another possibility Jim Hunter locks dusty in a closet during production,of secound piolet.

Robert Mitchum.

He would have been in his late forties when the show started, and would have brought a lot of gravitas to the role of Kirk.

Definitely would have been a draw for the show.

Well I think Gary Conway would have been the better Kirk. He was more classicaly handsome than Matheson, was in amazing shape and had a wonderfully stylistic fighintg style. Check out his fight with Matheson in the LOTG episode "The Golden Cage." And he could chew scenery as well! He went full frontal Shatner at the top of the Giants pilot: "it's drawing us in....like a magnet!"
