If MGM folds, what happens to Stargate?

The Direct-to-DVD movies have already been on hold for a while before of uncertain financial footings. In regards to SGU, as long as MGM is a functioning independent company and SyFy wants the show it will be made, but if MGM shuts down SyFy is SOL. If MGM were to file for bankruptcy then it's possible that Universal could decide to buy the SG rights and continue production in house, but if someone else buys MGM as a whole then it's up to the new owner to decide what happens to SGU.

Micheal Shanks has already said he doesn't expect another SG1 movie, sadly.

Maybe if/when the rights are sold we'll get that big-budget Stargate 2 starring Kurt Russel (and ignores SG1, Atlantis and Universe) that comes up occasionally. That would be bizarre.

Ooooooh...a bidding war between backers of the old Stargate movie universe and the Stargate SG-1 universe... Now, that would be interesting...

Or have someone else take over the reins entirely. Stargate has such wonderful potential and for years it's gone untapped. SG-1 has several years' worth of interesting ideas that could be rebooted into serious drama at long last, instead of shallow action and pussyfooting around.

MGM didn't cancel Bond 23. EON put it on hold until MGM can get themselves in gear.
Is this the same kind of on hold the SGA DVD and SG1 DVD are on;):p

I don't know. I was just correcting the original poster on the issue that it was EON, not MGM that put the Bond movie on hold. However, you can't honestly believe that it has been canceled the way the SG DVD movies pretty much have been.

That "shallow action" and "pussyfooting around" (which I call fun!) are what made SG1 and SGA great, IMHO.
You want misery and "serious drama?" Watch BSG and SGU.

This could have a lot of bearing if SGU continues after the second season no matter what Syfy's intentions are.

Something very similar happened a few years ago. Tribune had ordered a 4th season of Mutant X, but the production company fireworks entertainment folded bringing the show with it.
