If It Had Been Picard Instead of Spock In The Cave...

Aike

Commander
Red Shirt
...would you have liked that?

Here are some good things about this idea:

1. No discussions about time travel and restoring the time line since Picard knows nothing about these things.

2. Less writing for Orci and Kurtzman. They could just copy and paste stuff from the TNG movies like in this example.

Kirk meets Picard in the cave.

Picard: James T. Kirk...we made a difference once and we´ll make it again.
Kirk: How do you know my name?
Picard: I am Captain Jean-Luc Picard of the USS Enterprise. I´ve come from the 24th century to stop Nero.
Kirk (confused): Bullshit.
Picard: Bullshit?
Kirk (still confused): Captain of the
Enterprise, right?"
Picard: "That's right."
Kirk: "Close to retirement?"
Picard: "I'm not planning on it. I was out saving the Galaxy while your grandkids were rotting in their graves."
Kirk: I have no kids. At least not any I know of.
Picard:Mr. Kirk?"
Kirk: "Yes, captain?"
Picard: "Shut up."
Kirk: "Yes, sir."
Picard: "Fifteen seconds, I've been waiting to say that. Now, let me tell you something important. Buried deep inside you beneath the years of pain and anger is a capacity
you've forgotten...to try to make
yourself better than you are."
Kirk: Childish dreams, Captain. Lost in the
quarries
of Iowa. I'm what you
see now...

Picard: You know, when I was your age, I burned
with ambition. I was very proud and my
pride often hurt people. I made every
wrong choice a young man can ...But one
thing saved me ...I had a father who
believed in me.
Kirk
: That's your life…not mine.
Picard: You can still make a choice! Make the
right one now!
Kirk: I don´t know.
Picard: Please.
Kirk: I have no choices! I can't fight what I
am!

Picard (upset like in the first season of TNG):
Now, I am your family... don´t talk back to me. Don´t drop out. Don't let them do anything that takes you off the bridge of that ship because while you're there, you can make a difference."
Kirk: "Come back with me. Help me stop Nero. Make a difference now."
Picard: "Yes, we've made too many compromises already; too many retreats. He invades our space, and we fall back. He blows up entire worlds, and we fall back. Not again. The line must be drawn here! This far, no further! You and I will make Nero pay for what he´s done!"
Kirk "You could say that."
Picard: "You know, if Lily were here, she'd say I was an unevolved, revenge-seeking human being for taking on a mission like that... but let´s see what´s out there."

Oh that would have been just fab!! Splendid, even.

But.. all that torch waving at the ice squid would have been too much activity for Picard.

I'm not totaly versed in TNG, but I thought Picard and Papa Picard were a bit estranged Papa wanted little Jean-Luc to grow grapes or something.

Would much prefer Patrick Stewart to cameo as Picard in the next one rather than Shatner as Kirk - thats only if I had to choose... preferably the crew will stand on their own two feet rather than either of them showing up.

Are you kidding? Movie-Picard would have been out there in a tank-top with a flamethrower! "The monster stops hee-ah! And no further!"

You took any of that seriously? That's part of the joke is that Picard had his own daddy issues. ;)

Seriously speaking...having Picard instead of Spock could work. I just don't think it would work in terms of dramatically as well as Spock did.

Picard's done enough time travel. He's met Kirk, Cochran, Mark Twain, he's everywhere. I know a lot of Trek casts have been thru time, but Picard has been around too much. I think Spock was the perfect choice, just for the homage to classic Trek alone.

My Geek gene kicked in.

True, he had daddy issues according to the episode Tapestry. But that line is from Nemesis when Picard is trying to convince Shinzon to be a better man.

And thanks for "Quarries of Iowa" that is the is correct line.

The lines about "the capacity you've forgotten" was sort of said by Pike already, Kirk has already begun to acquire the discipline and self control needed to be a good officer in the Starfleet, of course if the film has been completely rewritten than you could make the line fit but than again Kirk would not be a lieutenant at the academy yet he would still be a green kid who just enlisted which wouldn't work very well. I think that this is nice fanfic 'what-if' writing but doesn't work well with the Kirk character that was established in the film.

Instead of torch-waving, Picard would speechify. The monster would be lectured within an inch of its life about the moral implications of attempting to eat James T. Kirk on an ice planet, and when Picard was finished, the humbled Big Red would be bowing obsequiously and edging toward the exit like he was Koloth at the end of "Tribbles".

Sure, it would have had to change, but my text was just an example how easy it would have been for Orci and Kurtzman to recycle old stuff from the TNG movies.
And the quote above isn´t fanfic. It´s John Logan. Yes, the one only John Logan who won an Oscar for Gladiator.

I think Spock was the perfect choice, just for the homage to classic Trek alone.

Spock was good, but old Pike would have been better. Just slap Tim Conway in a wheelchair and let him *beep* at young Kirk for 5 minutes. Kirk finally gets pissed off and finds Scotty on his own.

Picard would lull the red beast to sleep with an overly long, fatherly monologue extolling the virtues of being an advanced 24th century human who does not hate poor unevolved creatures.
When the monster awoke from his slumber, he'd be hungry and then eat Picard.:guffaw:

Very funny thread. I do seriously wonder though what it would've been like if Picard were in this film instead of Spock though - it'd have been like a passing back of the baton, and I think a lot of today's young viewers were more familiar with Picard - "the bald captain" to the layman - than the pointy-eared guy, so you got the symbolism of a new era there. What if he'd died? It'd be a very moving sendoff, moreso than Nemesis (hell, if he were just in the movie anyway it'd still be better than Nemesis).
