If Ecko hadn't died...

Joe Washington

Fleet Captain
Fleet Captain
If Ecko hadn't died and the actor playing him hadn't left the show, what changes in the series plot would have resulted from his continued presence?

He didn't have enough development to be missed all that much. Anybody who doesn't get a last name can't be too important. Look at Ilana, or Paulo, for that matter

I'd say his death was more important to the show's development, than his presence was. His death gave us our first clear understanding of Smokey's modus operandi

Don't get me wrong. I really liked Eko, but with so many people finding themselves dead, on this show, he was bound to be one of them eventually

It would've been nice to see him make a cameo though, like most everybody else. I doubt that will happen unfortunately

I think he would have more or less filled the role Ben did, but obviously getting into it a little differently.

They only said that he and Locke would have been rival spiritual leaders. So maybe Eko would have been leading the normal Christian folk while Locke led the kooky believe in the Island people. It does make you wonder how that would have changed the events of Season Three, though. I believe they said he was only supposed to be around for two years initially (so he would have died at the end of S3).

^See, I've heard that they had him under contract only for season two and he stayed on a few more episodes in season three to give him a final death scene. Then I've heard that he was supposed to be around until the end of season five and they had a whole storyline planned out for him up to that point. Most recently I've read that he was supposed to be around for the entire show.

So really, I think they had a few different ideas for where they wanted to take him throughout the show, but nothing set in stone as they didn't know if he would stick around past season two.

If he had survived and made it all the way to current events I could imagine him as a primary Jacob candidate. Especially if he was being pitched as a rival to Locke.

That would have given some meaning to the building of the church in season two. As it is, the building of the church doesn't really do much for the series as a whole.

Yeah, that and Jack asking Ana-Lucia to BUILD ME AN ARMY!!! were two of the great dropped plot threads of the show.

I still don't understand why his brother's plane crashed on the island. Was there a point to that?

Sure, Eko needed to find it there, Charlie needed drugs, & Boone needed to get dead :p

But seriously, was there any reason or point behind the real Henry Gale ballooning his way onto the island, only to die there, somehow?

lol Yeah, but I don't remember any of Henry Gale's family members conveniently showing up on the island.
