IDW Star Trek the Motion Picture Echoes

Just read the first issue. Really good fun. A rollercoaster that did not waste any time in getting going. It builds on some of the plot threads left over from TMP. It's familiar territory as far as the sci fi elements go but is kept fresh by making it an Uhura-cenrtric story with a political dimension.
Some minor gripes are that Chekov was erroneously drawn manning the navigation station, when it might have been nice to see DiFalco or the new official navigator. I rather enjoyed seeing some aliens in TMP but the crew is very human here - even all five security guards were human males. And, as ever, it's a shame that there is no appearance by Rand. I forever hope that she will be elevated back into the ensemble in these comics but alas she's out in the cold again, when she could have been, for example, shown helping Scotty in the shuttle bay.
Overall though, a really fun, action packed opener with lots of potential.

Classic BoPs in the TMP era make sense.
The Snipe-class from Lower Decks has square nacelles though. Could make a for a TOS movie-era ship.

I enjoyed the first issue. Reminds me a bit of the fan film "Of Gods in Men" that also had a renegade version of Chekov, though he wasn't evil like this version is alleged to be. I really like using The Motion Picture setting as well as this story seemingly giving a spotlight to Uhura, both versions. I also liked the admiral that tore into Kirk a bit. I am glad that Starfleet Command isn't too pleased with Kirk wanting to stick on the Enterprise instead of fully committing to his responsibilities.
Okay, now I have to read it. I wonder how they compare to those from the Waypoint - Phase II comic.

I finally got to issue #2 (Yeah, I'm well behind) ...still good, but I do find the occasional attempts to "modernize" the way the characters speak come across more like them being out of character for TMP.
Just little things like Kirk's "A Bajoran what now?" (Plus, why do writers always have the character "what" the easy part of the sentence?) or Sulu's "We have a minute or so before they, you know, blow us up."
Also, a Romulan saying "The human was correct. There's not much place to hide in here." Am I crazy, or is that a terrible sentence? Could be a regional thing, not sure.

Maybe they're taking notes from the SNW writers. Not sure what's going on there -- are the writers just siloed from other elements of production? Is there not time/staff for editing? But in the 80s they'd have delivered something like "We're going back . . . of the future."
Also reminds me of Bendis completely botching formal jargon in the Daredevil courtroom stuff. So . . . yeah, could be writer trying for something outside their normal mode and not quite getting it, could be just never got caught anywhere in the process.
Issue #3 has the sentence, "From where I'm from, no one would question my actions."
Just another one that is just a bit wonky, one too many froms. But not so much so that I don't look overly nitpicky for pointing it out.
Edit: Funny timing, I was re-reading a few old stories. I'm positive I've noted these before, but the Ezri story from Waypoint 2019 has her say, "One year size Jadzia died." instead of 'since'. And the story "Soldier On" from Star Trek 400 has Garak reporting to Tain that, "I'm sorry to report that Tain met an unfortunate end." I'm thinking IDW aren't exactly batting 100 when it comes to catching errors prior to printing.
