IDW is going to be doing a comic series following up what happened to the 23rd Century characters after Discovery escapes to the future.

Well, they could always do one that takes place later than this. It sounds like is gonna be right after Such Sweet Sorrow, so there's still plenty of time to fit in a Pike Enterprise series before TOS starts.

...Eh, not really, since CBS isn't bound by the tie-ins at all, and can change its mind (and actors can free up their availability) at any time down the road, and what might not seem appealing to the network right this moment might suddenly seem very appealing six months or a year from now.

I'd say them announcing Pike wasn't returning ages ago was a sign there won't be a Pike series

Exactly. I expect this was written before the first episode of season 2 even aired, and before the network realised how popular Anson would be.
