IDW 2008, New Frontier and MU!

Via the latest Star Trek Magazine IDW have announced some of next year's projects:

The first issue of D.C Fontana's Year Four miniseries will be called "The Enterprise Experiment" and is a sequel to "The Enterprise Incident", and the series is to be illustrated by Gordon Prucell.

Peter David will be writing a New Frontier miniseries, with art by Stephen Thompson.

John Byrne will writing and illustrate his own miniseries.

And the Tipton brothers will be doing something in the mirror universe, including mirror Pike, to tie in with Pocket's new MU anthology.

Here's the NF cover that came with the article:

All sounds good to me, glad to see some sort of relationship with Pocket going on.

If they brought out some DS9 relaunch comics (you could fit a story in there somewhere) and I'd buy a comic for the first time in a decade. Guaranteed.

Sweet news about New Frontier! Too bad Michael Collins isn't illustrating. Hopefully Stephen Thompson's art is better than the above cover because the depiction of Calhoun is way off.

Yeah, but at least there's some resemblance there. I would not even know that was Calhoun without the context.

Seconded (except I already get all the Trek comics), they've said they'd like to do DS9, but at the moment they only have the licenses for TOS and TNG (NF counts as TNG) and don’t want to expand out until they feel comfortable they can get enough sales to justify it. I'd really like to see some Titan comics (which are also under TNG) it would be great to actually see that crew and ship in action.

It's possible that's not actually Thompson's art, they tend to have several covers for each issue, so that could be an artist only used for the cover.

That's what I'm hoping for.

Those all sound interesting to me. And put me down as another buyer for a DS9 Relaunch mini or series. With the next novel not coming out until the summer, it would be really great to have new material from that series.

I'm glad to see that Gordon Purcell is doing Trek comics again.
He got back into the fold a couple of months ago with an issue of the current Year Four miniseries, and will be doing the final issue of that series, which is due out any time now.

Yep, all this sounds good to me - a vast improvement on IDW's Trek output thus far (though I did like Tipton's Klingon series). IDW are awfully expensive, though; I may end up having to wait for the trade on these.

Fantastic News! I know Stephen Thompsons Art, believe me, he's great!

My first reaction was: Oh – WOW! :D

What a great Christmas present! At least this is how I feel.

Hopefully Stephen Thompson is indeed good.

I noticed that the cover artist and interior artists are usually not identical. I don`t know if that is also the case here but I actually like the cover. It is a different style than what Mike Collins presented so well but I could get used to this. Shelby is definitely recognizable and this Calhoun meets the description in the books.

Yeah, i'm very happy too. And i'm pretty sure, the art will be different. I mean, c'mon it's just a teaser. A little "look over here, we make something for you". Nothing more. PAD wouldn't give NF in the hand of a bad artist ;)

We're in the same boat, Clay. At $3.99 per issue, a four-issue miniseries runs me the same amount as two full-length Trek novels. The stories and art are rarely sufficient for me to choose in favor of the comics over the books.

Do these IDW comics get collected in trade paperbacks in the future? Because that's generally how I get my comics, so I'd like to know if waiting is a good idea.

^ Yes, the miniseries all get collected into trades. I believe that both The Space Between and Blood Will Tell have gotten that treatment.
