Idiocracy

I've seen bits and pieces of this movie on Comedy Central for years now but have never taken the time to plan, seek it, and record it. Well, I did this weekend!

The pieces I'd see over the years and my skant knowledge on the premise made me laugh as I love the idea of this "dystopia by stupidity" as I think it's one of the directions the world is really heading.

Anyway, I'm watching the Comedy Central (censored) cut of it and I just get past the prologue (talking about the process of natural selection causing the entropy) had me rolling.

I need to get the DVD of this or something.

What a series of coincidences. I had listened recently to a podcast of an old interview with Mike Judge and it got me interested in this movie. Then, shortly thereafter I was looking for something on our cable guide and stubled across a listing for Idiocracy, so I DVR'd it. I'm having knee surgery tomorrow and I have a TON of stuff, including this (and the 6-part Python documentary, and Torchwood and Y Tu Mama Tambien and, of course, some good ol' Trek), that I am really looking forward to watching. You all have piqued my curiosity even more.

I thought it got a bit dragged out, but it was worth it just for the Justin Long scene-
"Don't wanna sound like a dick or nothing, but it says on your chart you're fucked up. You talk like a fag and your shit's all retarded. What I do is like... you know, haha, you know what I mean? Like..."

Aw, man, the Comedy Central version?

There are lots of movies where it doesn't matter if you see the Edited for Television version.

This is not one of them.

I saw a few minutes of the Comedy Central broadcast, and when they were even putting big black boxes over billboards and street signs, I had to change it.

The funny thing about Mike Judge is that both Officespace and Idiocracy bombed at the theatre but 90% of the people I know consider them classics and quote them all the time.

They're like the Shawshank Redemptions of comedy.

Didn't Idiocracy get some kind of horribly botched release and no marketing whatsoever? I recall it didn't get any kind of a marketing push and was basically dumped by the studio. That probably goes a long way toward explaining its pathetic box office.

I think Idiocracy is about half of what Office Space is. I found it OK and pretty funny in parts, but nothing close to being a classic. I've never had any desire to own it on DVD.

I still don't get how they survived in those chambers all those years without any power source.

Idiocracy had a world-wide release of only a few hundred figures and a world-wide take of less than $500,000. It had a very botched release and it seems was mostly direct-to-video.

In finishing watching it I loved the premise of it, the idea behind it, and what the "message" of it seemed to be. I think it had a lot of good ideas in it that, frankly, I don't think were exploited enough. But I laughed and some of the stuff that occurs in it is really stuff I see happening. The "Hit in the Balls" show that's popular that peope laugh mindlessly at just makes me think of TV series like "Wipeout." The movie "Ass" like the countless gross-out comedies that come out all of the time and also how "easily" people laugh at farts.

And the idea of the "dust bowl" occuring because they were trying to water plants with a Gatorade-like substance ("It has electrolytes!") is hilarious. A lot of good ideas but from the man who did "Office Space" I would've expected a bit better execution.

I'd still reccomend it as one to be seen, and I need to see the "theatrical"/DVD version to see what scenes had been removed and to get it un-censored.
