I'd just like to ask a question...

Allegedly ST begins post NEM which occurs after Trials and Tribulations (correct?) so wouldn't the Department of Temporal Investigations be on this temporal incident like flies on crap with the intent of keeping changes from occurring in the first place?

Does the DoTI very existence keep this from being a reboot? I think so unless Nero is so freaking bad-ass he can even outsmart them with thier time ships and temporal tracking technology.

What about Daniels? One thing we learned from him is the far future doesn't take this temporal incursion shit lightly.

JJ and Co had to take them into consideration. I think what we're seeing with changes are temporary temporal fluctuations which by the films end will be all sorted out.

Maybe this is the "heresy" they are talking about, ignoring this bs. :)

From the thread title I was expecting, "What does God need with a Starship?"

I highly doubt that the movie will spend that long in the post-NEM era before Spock travels back in time. There may be something resembling the DTI in there but I can't see it being too important a plot factor.

This is exactly the sort of silly shit I have been hoping and praying would be swept away by a bold new production team.

For MY sake, I hope they ignore 99.9% of post-TOS Star Trek.

Oh man, thank you for reminding me of this. The opening scene of Trials and Tribble-ations may well be the funniest 3 minutes of Trek ever.

"The man was a menace!" :guffaw:

Meanwhile, count me in the crew that hopes to god Abrams doesn't even give 3 seconds of screentime to please the continuity brigade.

Hah - that bunch of fucking bureaucrats always shows up a day late and a dollar short to take statements and fill out reports in triplicate. The Secretary put in an appropriation request for a time machine so that the investigators could jump in before the violations occurred, but that's tied up in committee.

I guess not...

I'm hoping that this movie will dwell primarily on the minutiae. It's the only way to save the franchise.

...if it truly is a reboot then the last thing you'd want to draw attention to is an established canonized Dept devoted to keeping time lines unpolluted.

JJ and Co had to take them into consideration.
Oh, no doubt... because the target audience is steeped in DS9 and Enterprise lore.

Sarcasm? I think I get it.

Sweep away any ideas of a 'time protection agency' by using time travel in a story which shows just how important having a TPA would be? If TT exists in the Trek-verse and the baddies can use it to their advantage then shouldn't the good guys also?

You're welcome, but your final statement has to be the most vindictive thing I have ever heard one Trek fan say against others and further proves to me just how far removed from the Ideas of Trek, so many claim to hold dear, we really are.

My dear, no offense, but if you found that harsh, you have plainly never had anything really insulting uttered in your presence. Further, the ideals of Star Trek (such as pop "ideals" are), have little to do with honoring consistency, or rules, or the delicate sensibilities of those who cannot deal with change even in something as inconsequential as fictional entertainment. In my actual actions, I try to honor diversity, struggle, achievement, idealism and mercy - none of which have one thing to do with whether or not I offend a fellow Trek fan by expressing an opinion over what would make a good movie. There is real injustice going on out there in the world. Please reserve your hurt feelings for those things.

I came here from st.com, I've heard it all. It just surprised me is all. Up till now, around here, I've only heard arguing and that is fine and dandy, it'd be pretty dull if we all agreed on everything. The implied hate of the statement gave me monentary pause to recall what I came here [hoping] for less of. No biggie though, still better than st.com; the land of absolutely no mod intervention.

This sort of thing is why I say, reboot away, let the anticanon whiners have their Trek v2.0. :D
How do you stand it when you're watching TOS and realize that every time you see main engineering it's been remodeled since you last saw it? Which version is 'canon'?

And which Enterprise nacelles are canon--the ones with the spikes or the ones with the lights? When I see them transform back and forth from scene to scene it gets confusing.

^ Since they were all on screen they are ALL canon! That's why I say, "Kill all canon and let J.J. sort 'em out!" :klingon:

You know engineers, they love to change things.

Certain allowances are made for production realities. And for those who are overly hung up on that level of minutia, there's the remastered versions.
