We've all read or heard people say and/or joke about shitting themselves from something scary, like say loud lightening, but I wonder:

How many here have actually shit themselves from being scared?



I just can't imagine this happening. I've never been so frightened or scared that I lost my bowel control.

I have mostly heard of people pissing themselves not shatting themselves. I think the term is one of those "figures of speech" that dont really make all that much sense.

It seems to me this would require some pretty extreme fear.

I've only ever read about men shitting themselves when they're in battle. There's a passage in All Quiet on the Western Front where this happens to a recruit during his first artillery bombardment.

I can't really think of a situation in civilian life that would feature that same degree of terror and helplessness. Maybe being bombed from the air? Dangling off the edge of a building?

I've never heard of anyone literally shitting themselves. But I do know two people to have wet themselves from fear, one from a very bad nightmare and another I had the misfortune of witnessing.
