this is something I hope for the second season! in discovery they like to show some characters that lived in the 23rd century, as will be the case with captain pike (and I guess spock). Dax lived at that time and in the last episode of the season we saw a Trill. I would like to see the cardassians of this time in the 23rd century were a democratic people who loved art and poetry
Tobin Dax is definitely dead by now, considering Emony Dax hooked up with McCoy in the 2240s. The Dax symbiont is either in Emony or Audrid during the 2250s.
As far as I know, the Federation didn't make First Contact with the Cardassians until the 24th Century. Also, as was already pointed out, the host of the Dax symbiont at the point in time in which Discovery is set wasn't Tobin.
The last thing this show needs is more callbacks and fanwank. I'd love it if season 2 is devoid of things we've seen before, but the finale of session 1 has already kind of scuttled that.
Not formally, but Iloja was an exile from Cardassia living on Vulcan when Tobin met him. I showed their meeting in my novel Rise of the Federation: Uncertain Logic.
For all we know, that was Emony getting a tattoo in the season finale. Maybe season 2 will start with them heading home and someone saying, "Wow, that was easy. Can't believe Pike needed our help with something so basic. Oh well, on to the next thing..."
Did you even read what you linked? The 22nd Century is the 2100s, DSC is in the 2200s. Edit: Oh someone edited it.
I would love to see Emony or Audrid Dax used well. I've always had the this fanwanky fantasy of Kelvinverse McCoy and Audrid Dax having a romance in the movies.
I always loved the idea of Dax existing in various incarnations throughout Star Trek history. I'd enjoy seeing any of the hosts make an appearance. Emony was the host during McCoy's younger years but I guess Audrid could've replaced her by the time Discovery is set. Or just send Jadzia or Ezri back in time
Trek Lit - particularly the Lives of Dax anthology - does expand on Dax's history. I thought McCoy meeting a new Dax would be more interesting than him being reunited with the one he was already familiar with.
^ Agreed! If I remember correctly, the Trill being a joined species wasn't known at this time, right? It's been a while since I've read TLoD, but wasn't it sort of a character point that McCoy had no idea she was joined? It would have been great to see him meet the next host and still feel a connection but not be able to explain why.
Trills being joined was still a secret then, yes. The tv series made no comment of McCoy knowing one way or the other, but the Emony novella in Lives of Dax clearly establishes what McCoy knows (I won't spoil it for you).
