Even better, get the DVD of the classic Patrick Troughton story "The Invasion" (newly complete with animated replacements for the lost episodes 1 & 4). Then savor the Cyber-goodness one episode at a time over 8 crazy nights!

Its a good point though. Not to turn Doctor Who all PC, but it would be nice if they at least acknowledged other holiday beliefs.
Hell they've had gay characters, and interracial marriages. I doubt anyones gonna get bent out of shape if they bring in a jewish companion.

Yes I like it, the Doctor could aid some heroic Redcoats against evil insurgents led by George Washington (who'd be some evil and disfigured lunatic, possibly in league with the Daleks)

Actually, the Doctor would be more likely to aid the heroic rebels against the oppressive Redcoats and the tyrannical British.
That's probably why there's not been a Revolutionary War episode. To be true to the Doctor's personality, the target audience would have to be painted as the villains of the piece.

To be COMPLETELY fair, he'd probably favor the Revolutionary leaders over the British leaders, but he'd also probably favor the Revolutionary leaders (such as John Adams) who opposed slavery over those who favored it or practiced it (such as Thomas Jefferson), and he'd probably favor the average Briton over the British government and military, and he'd probably favor the average American over the Revolutionary leaders, and he'd probably favor the enslaved Africans over the whole lot of 'em.

But... the Christmas specials are, as Richard Dawkins puts it when talking about his love of carols, culturally Christian (not religously). They take place at Christmas, but it's the Christmas of contemporary Britain/British shared myth, based around turkey dinner, a touch of Victoriana, that Slade song, various cliches of Christmas telly (weddings, disaster movies), and slightly less messianic imagery than tends to turn up in the season finale...
Jewish companion? How do you know we haven't already had one? OK, I can't spot any surnames with obvious Jewish ancestry, but that doesn't prove much, and if you can spot one line where a companion hints at a religious belief, you know Who better than I do (Victoria, maybe)... The only companion whose religious ancestry we do know anything about is probably Dodo, assuming she is genuinely descended from the Huguenaut (and therefore French Protestant) Anne Chaplette. It's just not relevant to bring it up - it's not as if the Doctor would care, he judges people on who they are, not what their ancestors are.
Exactly. Christmas is the defining holiday at the end of the year and that's what most christian-based countries aim for with hoiday specials. It's really only the jewish-run entertainment industry in America that pushes Hanukkah in its shows.
I've read the articles about the "holiday period" controversies in the US and some of it is downright scary. Not allowed to call it a Christmas tree?? Please...
