I truly believe Ricardo Montalban should've won an Oscar for TWOK.

I really think Ricardo Montalban should've gotten an Oscar for Star Trek II.

If Heath Ledger can win for The Dark Knight, then Ricardo Montalban should've damn well won for Star Trek II. That was the performance of a lifetime and, imo, as good a performance as Heath Ledger's Joker. I mean out of all the Star Trek movies (or even all of the series), his performance as Khan is probably the most remembered out of all of the great performances in Trek.

Anyone agree?

Hell yeah, ya got my vote! Best bad guy of all time... just not as bright as he thought he was.

Wow, for real? I mean, his performance had a cute B-movie charm to it, but I've never considered it amazing or anything.

No, it wasn't worthy of an Oscar.

This reminds me of a girl I knew who really liked Armageddon and thought that therefore it should get an Oscar.

Damn right, an amazing performance! The actual award for Best Supporting Actor in 1982 went to LOUIS GOSSETT, JR. in "An Officer and a Gentleman". Not really my cup of tea, so haven't had the opportunity to compare.

Although in the world of Trek, Ricardo Montalban's performance as Khan may be percieved as Oscar worthy, in the world of Hollywood, it is merely critically acclaimed and not at the level to be nominated for an award in the highest recognitions of the Film Business

I agree, however that Montalban was excellent and brought a fresh perspective never seen before in Star Trek at that time, one of the many reasons why TWOK is regarded as the "finest in the series"

Not to mention the fact that TV/B movie stars are not likely to be considered for that award either.

Absolutely! His performance and Judson Scott's are still trying to be emulated: look at Shinzon and Vkruk from NEMESIS and Nero and Ayel from ST2009.

Completely agree, it was sad that Heath Ledger died, but that didn't automatically make his Joker performance worthy of an Oscar and honestly, I was very underwhelmed by his version of the Joker.

Montalban's performance was exceptional, not that Nimoy shouldn't have been nominated too.

I think that Montalban's performance was memorable and entertaining but too over the top for an Oscar nomination.

I agree completely.

I also loved Heath Ledger as The Joker...I didn't think anyone could top Jack Nicholson from 1989's Batman film...but Heath Ledger hit it out of the park.

That was in a comedy though so that's somewhat expected. Put a hammy performance in a sci-fi picture and the Academy goes WTF? what trash.

I think he should have been recognised for making the best of the material. TWOK is my fave film for many reasons including the acting. But the lines were at times comic book like. Ricardo however, delivered them with finesse so that they seemed natural. It was a stunning performance. But it was also sad that Kirk never met his enemy face to face. Perhaps if it had then they would have had better material for Ricardo to be considered.

IIRC, there was a HUGE discussion on the confrontation between Kirk and Khan, whether it should take place in person, what form it would take place (physical or mental battle). This is probably found in Allen Asherman's MAKING OF book.

Some people really need to re-adjust their quality meter.

I was just thinking that. :wtf:

Considering how many howlers the Academy itself has given us (Dances with Wolves over Goodfellas not just for best film but for best director? ha HA!), I'd suggest we start with it.

Montalban's performance was perfectly calibrated to the material. Maybe he didn't deserve an Oscar but (to quote Gaff) then again, who does?

When I showed my friends TWOK, they thought Montalban's portrayal was over-the-top and ridiculous. They couldn't even take him seriously as a bad guy. And honestly, I can't say I blame them.

Not to mention the fact that TV/B movie stars are not likely to be considered for that award either.

Also, the production of ST II began life as a telemovie, and was produced and filmed by Paramount's television division, so it was never really poised for Oscar greatness.

The Best Actor nominees in 1982 were

  • Dustin Hoffman for Tootsie
  • Paul Newman for The Verdict
  • Ben Kingsley for Gandhi
  • Peter O'Toole for My Favorite Year
  • Jack Lemmon for Missing

The Best Supporting Actor nominees were

  • Louis Gossett, Jr. for An Officer and a Gentleman
  • Charles Durning for The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas
  • James Mason for The Verdict
  • John Lithgow for The World According to Garp
  • Robert Preston for Victor/Victoria
Up against most of those performances, Khan was a trifle.
