Yeah, the usual convention is that * has higher precedence than +, giving A = (D - C) / B.

Snaploud's solution is correct, assuming B is nonzero. I mention this, because even in real world applications, division by zero can crop up and cause strange behavior.

In particular:

When B is zero, any value of A is a solution, provided C=D.

On the other hand, when B is zero, but C and D are not equal, there is no solution.

actually no, it wasn't. I had a formula for a program I am making that I needed to solve for and I couldn't remember how.
