Actually, this is one of my biggest peeves. I cannot stand when people say this to the point where my tongue bleeds keeping myself from correcting them. Gawd, I seen and, I got, just drive me nuts.

But, what's wrong with I got as in "I got you a fancy pencil for Christmas"?

Nothing. But i have heard it used incorrectly, and that kinda drives me nuts.

I think i might just hate the word got.

That one's so ambiguous that I use "indifferent" to convey the same idea.

Just to play Devil's Advocate, I have a feeling "I got" evolved as an abbreviated form of "I've got," with the "v" sound just kind of dropping off after years of use.

That's how my relatives in South Carolina (where I was born) talk. Especially the "y'all," which I inadvertently utter from time to time.
