I really hate ferengis

Quark - saved Sisko from the Jem'Hadar; saved Kira, Jake, Rom and Leeta from a Dominion prison (thereby helping save the entire Alpha Quadrant); saved Odo during The Ascent; helped honor Jadiza's memory by getting her into Sto-vo-kor.

Rom - designed the minefield which kept the Dominion at bay in the early days of the war; helped save the entire Alpha Quadrant by dismantling the station's weapons in Sacrifice of Angels; renounced Ferengi society to become a Bajoran engineer.

Nog - joined Starfleet and bought into the Federation's philosophy hook, line and sinker.

Yeah, as a species they're crude and greedy, but that's the whole point. Even though they are greedy, even cruel at times, they still have redeeming qualities.

I love the Ferengi.

I think a little bit of Ferengi goes a looong way, but I don't hate them. There are more Ferengi I like than dislike, actually.

I didn't like the way they were portrayed in TNG. I found them to be silly, ridiculous, stupid, and unbelievable creatures. It didn't make any sense that they could be capable of making any real progress in the warp capable universe.

In DS9 there was a significant improvement. The characters remained overly profit focused, but more believable. Shimmerman really brought Quark to life. I also found the Rom and Nog characters added a lot more dimension to the species. They're not my favorite, but I appreciate them for what they bring to the Star Trek realm.

Another thing... the acceptance of greed varies from culture to culture, so I can appreciate a whole race of beings obsessed with it. The Ferengi Rules of Acquisition are hilarious. And the whole ear sensitivity thing is pretty funny. However... I just can't see how a Ferengi would find a humanoid woman to be attractive. They're just so different... you'd figure our revulsion of them would work the other way around. ;)

Shimmerman as Quark really redeemed the Ferengi for me. I didn't care for them so much after TNG, though I didn't hate them as much as some others did. But Quark ended up being one of my favourite DS9 characters, and Nog even grew on me as they developed his character more. Rom, not so much.

I will admit, principle Snyder from buffy did play the character good, but I hated who he was supposed to be so much it only made it worse.

I want a Ferengi admiral in the Next movie.

It would be fun.

Rom is not ugly!! Aside from that I find them quite interesting and at the very least funny. Even in the first episode they appeared in I liked those whips they were swinging about and the way they say Hew-mon. I think they were first portrayed in a negative light but were explored in greater detail in DS9. I've always liked them and even more so since DS9.

Anybody else hate the whole ferengi race, they are just so ugly and annoying, don't really know what to add as examples are not needed any trek fan knows what they are, just curious if anyone else hates them.

I'm kinda with you....
THe only Ferengi I liked was the scientist in TNG.

TNG - dislike Ferengis; DS9 - love Ferengis! So much fun and character development of Quark, Nog and Rom!

I love the Ferengi, as a race and as a culture. As so many Star Trek aliens are just symbols for a certain type of human mentality, the Ferengi are essentially 20th century Americans. "Farang", after all, is the common Asian word for "Westerner."

"Common Asian"? What language is "Asian"?

Never heard that "common Asian" word and I live in Asia and am a "Westerner" (ugh, I hate that English word, btw). It may be Thai, but certainly is not "pan-Asian."

I like Ferengi. Universe needs a comedic race there, with all Romulans, Breen, Cardassians, Nausicaans etc.

@PythonTrek, @Gul Re'jal, thank you so much for not focussing on the actual point of this thread so that you could school me in my ignorance. Much appreciated.

Got any opinions about Ferengi, or just trolling?

"Farangi" is Persian for Foreigner, deriving from the Arabic word Faranj, meaning Franks (i.e. Fench Crusaders). There's also (according to wikipedia anyway) a Greek word, ferengios, which means a guarantor or trustworthy person...

There is also "farang" in Thai, but that's as likely to be a corruption of the English word "foreign"
