I need to quit my job

RoJoHen

As some of you may know, I left my old bartending job for 6 months to pursue other things. After those things failed to meet expectations, I returned to my bartending job, which had been a steady source of income and fun place to work for the past 3 years.

During my 6 month absence, some changes occurred. My old managers had been traded out for new ones, and different people had been promoted/changed jobs/whatever. It was fun coming back for the first few weeks, but we suddenly started noticing some shady dealings going on.

Liquor was missing from the bar, and money was missing from the safe. We suspected it was our General Manager, so we secretly started tracking things every morning and every night to see exactly when things were going missing. After a few weeks of this, we had definitive evidence that it was in fact our GM who was responsible.

We presented this information to the owner of our franchise, who then scheduled an "emergency meeting" with our GM. We expected our GM to be fired. He was not, and they somehow managed to make the thefts look like our fault.

I need to get out of that place. I am furious about the current situation, and all of my co-workers are paranoid that anything they do will get them in trouble and possibly get them fired. Everybody is angry, and I am angry being around them. Every night that I work I am two steps away from walking out the door and never looking back. It takes a lot to piss me off, and the fact that this place pisses me off on such a constant basis feels like a sign that I need to leave.

It's so disappointing. That place used to be so much fun a few years ago.

I would advise that you get some sort of documentation that shows that your coworkers know that it was the GM who was stealing otherwise the management might try to blame you when you leave.

Nobody even cares about the stealing anymore. It was pushed under the rug. I don't have access to the safe, so it's impossible for me to steal the money. And we already have written documentation that proves it was our manager. There's really nothing to be done at this point. The stealing abruptly stopped after our managers had their meeting, but there were no consequences from it. The only real consequence was that it has created an atmosphere of distrust and anger.

Right now, I just can't stand the place or the people there, and I need to get out.

Easy-ish, though I'd really prefer something else. I don't want to quit until I have something else lined up, but it's getting harder and harder to go into work everyday.

Do you know why he did not sack the GM the last person you want to give access to the safe he a known thief.
It seems so strange.:wtf:

You seem to be a pretty impulsive sort of guy, so I'm just going to say that you should start making serious, feasible plans before you end up doing something for emotional reasons.

There are various reasons I can think of. Firstly, we are being sued by a former employee because the GM fired him unjustly. The company would lose credibility if they fired that same GM for stealing.

Also, this place has had 29 manager changes in the last 27 months. They can't afford to train a new one.

Oh, believe me, I'm trying. I have just never been put in a situation that has made me this upset before. I should not be this stressed out because of a fucking bartending job.

It was my plan to quit at the end of July anyway once I got a bunch of my summer plans out of the way (I don't want to be requesting time off at a brand new job), but I might just have to push up the date...at the very least, I'm going to try and adjust my schedule so I can avoid working with certain people.

I hope you start to think about these things intelligently. I had supervisors who were asses, some of them jerks at times. I worked in the Laboratory Animal Care field (no we did not do animal tests. We just took care of them). It wasn't easy. The management didn't always treat the cagewashers and the techs well. And many of the investigators (researchers) were mean and unrespectful to us.

But I stayed put because I had to work my way up and build my finances so I would be better equpped to find my way. It hasn't been easy and I still had to go back to school even after things seemed to get better.

I'm starting a teaching job at an inner city school here in DC. I don't expect it to be easy. My superiors may be hard on me, and my students may make it hard for me. But I'm going to stand firm and tall and weather it until fall arrives. I still have a year left to finish my new degree before I can find a place for my marriage. I've been watching my money. It's hard, especially when I'm engaged. But I will manage.

It seems like it hasn't just been a "fucking bartending job," though. It was a job you've had for several years, a place where you had good friends and some really good times. You came back to it after a bad experience elsewhere, and not only was it not what you remembered, it's been much worse.

I think it's understandable that you're upset and stressed out because this job has been a big part of your life. But with some luck and planning, you can move on to something better and I wish you the best of luck with that.

Until you find something else you just need to go in there and do your job and try and not think about all the horrible stuff...yes that may seem hard...but why stress out about something you have no control over? Good luck on the job hunt! :)

The GM must be pretty slick if he can con the owner so convincingly.

That's what I was thinking. Dude has skills. Or dirt.

RoJo - "you can never go home again" ;)

If you have a good contingency plan/escape route, make your move! No point being miserable.

I agree with Kestra, and believe me I emphatise with your situation. My advice is to aggressively job hunt and ride this gig until the wheels fall off -- i.e. they terminate you, lay you off, or you find a better job.

How did I know that was Half Baked before I clicked on it?

My thoughts? Quit your job for another bartending job (where did your old manager go, is it feasible to transfer there?). Then look for something permanent (something you'd be happy with this time).

I'm sorry to hear even coming back to your old job isn't working out as planned. You go from Plan A to Plan B, and now it seems you have to go to some kind of Plan C. The work environment you described--or perhaps the management--isn't something very stable. I definitely wouldn't want to work in a place where corruption goes unchecked/unpunished and the employee morale is low.

The question is, where do you want to go or what do you want to do next? To me, you're a very flexible and versatile guy who's eager to embrace change (and change isn't something people easily adjust to) and not afraid to try new things, and I admire you for those qualities. You just need a more stable work environment. You already know your interests; perhaps you'd like to find something you'd enjoy doing in the long term. Good luck.

When things don't go well at work it affects your whole life. :(
Just think, all this shit & drama will be behind you (hopefully soon) & you can laugh about how ridiculous the whole situation was.

The owner has very few options. He can't afford to train outside managers, and nobody inside wants to be promoted because we all know the job comes with a pay cut, more hours, and absolutely no security. He really can't afford to lose any more managers than he already has.

You're absolutely right. This place has been a big part of my life, and I've made amazing friends there. Hell, I have two godchildren as a result of this job. I'm not going to quit right now. I need income, and I don't have anything else lined up (though I do have something potentially lined up...we shall see). I think I just needed to vent because I really don't have anybody AT work I can talk to without causing all kinds of drama.

I don't think my GM conned anybody. I honestly think the owner has been in on it the whole time. My franchise was bought out by a very shady company a couple years ago, and it's all been downhill from there.

My old GM took a job in Las Vegas and is making ridiculous amounts of money. He has offered me a bartending job at his restaurant, but that would require moving to Vegas, and that's a commitment I'm not willing to make.

Update: I have a job interview for a full-time, salaried position at an insurance company on Thursday. One of my old co-workers has been working there for a few months, and she loves it, so hopefully this will work out.
