I need a video editor...

I figured this would be the best place. I have a PC if that matters.

I had a crazy Friday night and got some great videos. However because my friend is tall most of the videos are sideways, I need to move them 90 degrees counter clockwise. Plus edit them a little bit in the beginning and the end.

I have never edited a video before, so simple and free are a must.

I'm assuming that you're still new to this editing thingy, so I'd recommend a really straightforward app for you. One which merely does whatever it is that you're looking for -- and that is to rotate videos.

www.dvdvideosoft.com has a range of apps, and don't download the whole studio, just look for the one where you get to rotate your videos.

They're quite tiny in size, don't really interrupt your work and quite fast on the whole.

Any recommendations for a slightly more advanced (free) editing program? I'd like to cut and splice a couple of videos together, add an audio track, some titles... relatively simple things. Youtube/home video work, I'm not going to be doing any green screen action scenes.

I use Sony Vegas 8, its very easy to use and you can add video, text, sound, music and all by dragging and drop, and if i can use Sony Vegas then anybody can use it....i got it for £18 from play, and it was a bargain.

I am making a Dr Who DVD for my Dr who mad young niece from a visit she made to the Dr who exhibition, and with Sony Vegas its very easy to add all your photos, movies, text and audio of your choice, and all from drag and drop, which i love....and that's the very basics you can do...the thing offers a lot of professional effects but also is easy for people like me(thiko's)....i will throw something together in 5 min to let you see how easy it is to use and how quick you can render and stick it up on youtube.....

That's 4 different film bits all spliced together, 1 audio track(although i could put more) and a few effects like fly in and shutter...the Dr who vortex is actually chopped up with all the original titles taken out and then just spliced together to make a title free vortex that you can add your won titles to, and Vegas does all the splicing.

VirtualDub is the best freeware video editor I have found, though it is a bit bare-bones. It looks like a Linux freeware app because, well, it IS a Linux freeware app (though, it runs on Windows too). The "core version" I linked to above doesn't support MPEG2, but there are other versions that do.

Corel Visual Studio is the nicest "moderately priced" app I have tried. It does transitions and gives you a working timeline and other nice things that VirtualDub doesn't do.

A good, freeware video editor is something of a non-entity I think, if you find a better one that VirtualDub I'd be interested to hear about it!

I'd go with Virtual Dub as well -- it's free, fast and fuss-free.

There are plenty of options out there, but not everything will fit your needs. Test and trial, and you'll find your worthwhile.

Another vote for virtualdub for basic editing, splitting and muxing, I used to use it a lot for fixing synch errors, back when rippers and encoders had no idea what they were doing.
