any recommendations? I was gonna pick one up at Best Buy but they seem to carry only 2 brands, APC & Cyberpower. Are either of those ok or is there something better out there? anything to look out for & to avoid?
:)

APC makes a few different tiers. The "Smart-UPS" line is very popular in the IT world to provide power to sensitive computer equipment. It's a bit pricier than the entry level models, but it reliably boosts, trims and outputs a clean sine wave. Sensitive power supplies and AC motors don't have a clue if your utility is browning, surging or just dead. You may not find SUA models at Best Buy. Check out home theatre, they sometimes have entertainment quality batteries that do the same. I think they are $$$.

^thanks, though Im embarrassed that I didnt exactly understand everything you posted. :alienblush: I have a Dell that runs with an AMD Phenom X3, I just want something that will give me enough time to shut down my computer when the power goes out...the basics I guess. I'll look out for the SUA's but yeah Im also kinda limted in how much I can spend.

What I mean is if you only occasionally lose power, anything will do. If you truly want something to truly filter and regulate the power coming out of the wall, you have to step it up.

thanks, now I have a better idea of what it is I need...

UPS= uninteruptable power supply, right? is there a more common name for them?

I would go with "battery."

I wouldn't. Anyone unfamiliar with the term "UPS" is unlikely to be of any assistance in selecting one. "Battery" is an imprecise term and many UPS models perform functions beyond that of a battery.
