Hey, all. Don't want to debate whether Fleet Captain is a separate rank from Commodore -- personaly, I feel the former is a title, and the latter is an actual rank -- but I wanted to express my like of the rank.
If you look at the rank's history in the U.S. Navy, it's rather convoluted, as it's been adopted and dropped many times. But in many other world navies, it is an actual rank.
I also rather enjoyed the fact that there were two kinds of commodores -- ship's captains and starbase commanders. It would also make sense that perhaps the rank existed to prevent a bloated admiralty at Starfleet, yet reward captains with long-standing, distinguished service like Commodore Matt Decker.
I've wondered if the commodores we saw had other, special duties that captains didn't. We do see Commodore Bob Wesley in charge of an attack force -- something that rank indicates if you look at its application in other navies.
Unfortunately, they abolished commodore for TNG and subsequent shows, but I wish they'd kept if for the movies. "Commodore Kirk" has a certain ring to it, and it would've made more sense for him to be reduced one step in rank back to captain rather than several from admiral. Or he could've kept the rank.
What do you all think of the rank commodore? I say, if it's good enough for the Royal Navy and other navies of the world, it ought to be good enough for Starfleet.
