I Like Commodores!

Red Ranger

Admiral
In Memoriam
Hey, all. Don't want to debate whether Fleet Captain is a separate rank from Commodore -- personaly, I feel the former is a title, and the latter is an actual rank -- but I wanted to express my like of the rank.

If you look at the rank's history in the U.S. Navy, it's rather convoluted, as it's been adopted and dropped many times. But in many other world navies, it is an actual rank.

I also rather enjoyed the fact that there were two kinds of commodores -- ship's captains and starbase commanders. It would also make sense that perhaps the rank existed to prevent a bloated admiralty at Starfleet, yet reward captains with long-standing, distinguished service like Commodore Matt Decker.

I've wondered if the commodores we saw had other, special duties that captains didn't. We do see Commodore Bob Wesley in charge of an attack force -- something that rank indicates if you look at its application in other navies.

Unfortunately, they abolished commodore for TNG and subsequent shows, but I wish they'd kept if for the movies. "Commodore Kirk" has a certain ring to it, and it would've made more sense for him to be reduced one step in rank back to captain rather than several from admiral. Or he could've kept the rank.

What do you all think of the rank commodore? I say, if it's good enough for the Royal Navy and other navies of the world, it ought to be good enough for Starfleet.

It's why I'm easy. Easy like a Sunday morning.

On a related topic, I found this web page comparing the officer and enlisted ranks of NATO countries' navies, and find some of the differences in rank interesting.

Yeah, they had a great funk sound -- and they made some good early home computers too!

Yeah, I grew up on the Commodores...

The Star Trek versions as well as the funky versions....

Actually if Kirk were a Commodore the guys making the movies wouldn't have needed to demote him just to keep him captain of the Enterprise.

They really didn't need to demote him from Admiral to put him in charge of the Enterprise either. He should have just been the SOPA (Senior Officer Present Afloat). Still in charge of the mission, but Decker still Captain of the ship and in charge of it's day to day operations.

Agreed. That never made much sense to me, but Decker's demotion was put in to increase tension between Decker and Kirk. The tension still would'be been there regardless, as Decker resented his plum assignment yanked from him by Kirk. At least they kept him an Admiral and Spock a Captain in TWOK! :bolian:

I've thought that before, but didn't have the terminology at hand.

^^^That would have been enough to provide that tension with Decker. Kirk would have had a hard time letting ANYONE make command decisions on his ship. It would have felt a lot less contrived.

Also, didn't Kirk have a Commodore computer in his San Francisco apartment?
