I know this much is true: Eighties studios will be missed

Yeah, that's right: half of the studios where most of the music we all know and love was recorded are being torn down: :eek:

A member of Spandau Ballet today attacked the "clinical" modern recording process after several London's studios closed down.

Steve Norman, saxophonist and guitarist with the Eighties group, who are performing a comeback tour this autumn after their acrimonious 1990 split, spoke of his sadness at the demise of studios including the Olympic in Barnes, where the Beatles recorded All You Need Is Love.

Wessex Studios in Highbury, where The Clash recorded London Calling, and Eden in Chiswick, where Sinead O'Connor recorded Nothing Compares 2 U, have also gone.

Software advances, the falling cost of technology and a squeeze on costs by record companies have all contributed to their loss. It is now possible to have a complete recording studio with virtual instruments in your laptop and create tracks at a fraction of the cost.

A lot of the studios where Elvis recorded have come down in recent years. And for that matter, many of the places he did very famous concerts (the "save the Shell" campaign comes to mind) at and Liberty Land amusement park in Memphis got dismantled and sold. Where Elvis played his last concert got torn down, I believe.

I believe the place where Elvis recorded many hits in Nashville got torn down just a few years ago, too.

Sun Studios is one of the few that truly remains intact (complete with the ancient, ragged piano in the corner where Jerry Lee Lewis played his hits and the Million Dollar Quartet jammed).

Stax Studios in Memphis (known for a lot of soul records) was torn down in 1989 by a church that was to move onto the lot, but they realized they made a tragic mistake and rebuilt it.
