I just loved Star Trek IV!

Tribble Threat

I watched Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home, and thought it was the best movie I've seen in a very long time! That's the one where they go back to the 1980s and talk to whales.

I especially loved Kirk's and Spock's attempts to swear! Why can't all movies be this fun?

What did you think of it?

Speaking as someone who got into Star Trek before she turned 11, I thought it was a very fun movie. And it was living proof that properly placed cuss words can be funny. Gillian swore in front of a nun! It's doubly funny now because she later played a minister's wife!

I saw it for the first time in my life just a couple of weeks ago and was very pleasantly surprised. Normally I'm pretty allergic to scripts based on time travel, but Star Trek IV was such a charming and pleasant movie that I was willing to give it a big free pass.

In fact, the only real weak points are story wise; besides the time travel stuff also the fact that they could've just beamed aboard any whale they could find (right?).

On the plus side you have a nice tempo, great aesthetics with lots of variety and above all, splendid dialogue. My favorite ones being Chekov asking for the nearest Nuclear facility with his thick russian accent, and when Kirk tried to explain the erratic behavior of Spock by having taking too much LDS.

Those were great scenes! I agree. And you're right that they could have beamed up any whale. Maybe they wanted the whale to consent first?

Yeah, the idea that Spock could be a Mormon is hilarious.

It was at the time the biggest box office hit of the film series. Comedy is hard to pull off, and Trek has a very mixed record on comedies, but ST:IV does it well, and it also gives the whole crew moments to shine. I like the whole “team” aspect of this one, and also that the humor is silly and fun, rather than mean-spirited.

It wasn't the biggest box office hit when you're talking about how many people saw it in the movie theater. That would have been Star Trek the motion picture.
It wasn't the most profitable in the movie series that would have been Star Trek 2 Wrath of Khan.
And adjusted for inflation it was not biggest hit.
It's simply made more money on paper when it was not adjusted for inflation.
