I just finished reading the Song of Ice and Fire

Shurik

Fleet Captain
Fleet Captain
Those 4 books are definitely among the best I've ever read. I don't remember when the last time I could finish couple of hundreds of pages in one sitting ...

My favorite out of 4 in A Storm of Swords, especially the last third of the book. The fourth book left the whole story in a very interesting situation, and it's pity that the release date for the fifth book is unknown so far ...

It's really quite frustrating as a reader and fan of the series that Martin seems to be having such difficulty writing this series. He has such a great attention to detail that the writing process has bogged down. And one thing to note about the fourth book is that it is really only half of the story that was meant for it. Martin was likely under pressure from his publisher to release SOMETHING because of the constant delays, so he finished only half of the PoVs and this was AFFC. Plus the book was getting to an unwieldy length.

By the time the next installment comes out I will have forgotten all the plotlines.

The fourth book started very slow, not much happened there until the last parts. Then in last 200-300 pages or so the story picked up, went to all sorts of interesting directions ... and ended abruptly. The problem is that the fifth book is supposed to be about the other half of characters (IMO, much more interesting bunch than those in AFFC), so we'll see the real continuation of the story only in the sixth book, which, by current rate, will be out sometime in 2014, and the last planned book will probably my 40th birthday's present ...

There will be overlap between A Feast for Crows and A Dance with Dragons, but it will still push the timeline forward and there will be some PoV characters from AFFC in ADWD, as well as some new ones and one returning from the earlier books.

Martin was reportedly very close to finishing earlier this summer (his aim was end of June and up til a few weeks beforehand he seemed to think it was a reasonable goal), and assuming he is still 'almost done' after 2 months vacationing and conventioning, the book should be out by spring.

We have a new 'Dunk and Egg' novella coming in the near future too.
