I hope Star Trek (2009) mimics nuBSG in this respect...

Remember when it was announced that Battlestar Galactica was being rebooted with a new cast and no relation to the original series? Fans were up in arms and then had puppies when they found out that their favorite cigar-chewing walking cliche Starbuck was being recast as a woman. Then, once the show premiered to critical acclaim and, initially, strong ratings, that crowd either lowered their voices or disappeared outright.

My hope is that if Star Trek (no bloody Roman numerals!) is a success, and the trailer gives me hope, that it will put the final nail in the coffin of the increasingly irrelavent "hardcore purists" who bitch about nacelles, canon, and Captain April and they, along with the BSG "hardcore purists" and Doctor Who "hardcore purists", will quietly fade away into fandom obscurity, only comming out when their favorite aging dinosaur of an actor needs to pay for their mortgage by signing yet more autographs and answering the same questions for the three-hundreth time. One can dream, huh?

I suppose- but the new BSG wasn't as big a hit as people think. So maybe not the best idea to wish it to be the same...

Ah, we would be so lucky if this movie ends up being only half as good as the new Battlestar Galactica. :techman:

nuBSG was not all that well recieved. The critics liked it more than the fans. It progressed down and down.

That said I just hope they do NOT go to the BSG reboot route. BSG was a short TV series that had nothing happen until CGI could take over the special effects.

Star Trek has a continuity base that is not so easy to "reboot". It is on thing to provide backstory to fill in the gaps. (ie young Kirk dumping the vett and stating his name to the cop) It is quite another to cut out pike and april from the continuity.

nuBSG went into too many left wing politically correct nonsense plot lines. It just made it unwatchable.

The "unwatchable" part of you post is a matter of opinion -- some people like nuBSG and some don't. That's fine.

But the "too many left wing politically correct plotlines" part has me a bit confused. I'm a moderate-conservative, and I don't see BSG's plots as left-wing or politically correct.

For example, I think it the whole mono-theist/poly-theist aspect of BSG is handled in a very balanced non-left wing manner.

Ever notice how people don't like the movie bitch about how they don't like the mvoie, and people who do like the movie bitch about how they don't like the people who don't like the movie?

I really hope that the new Star Trek is not like the new BSG. I didn't like the CGI Cylons or the human-like Cylons. I watched around five episodes, but found them all boring. They need to create more props for that show because too much of it looked like normal everyday Earth.

Star Trek has 700+ hours of drama already put to the screen whereas BSG had a miniscule fraction of that before it was rebooted. Apples and Oranges.

I am in no way hostile toward anyone who prefers the original version of anything. In many cases, I am one of those people, and while I have an open mind about the upcoming movie, I suspect that I will always prefer the original cast and stories.

Having said that, I hope the upcoming movie paves its own way without the needless baggage of over 40 years of continuity.

I just love to work at my Battlestar with its FTL drive that I see everyday.
