I hate Labor Day Weekend

A couple years ago, we actually had a clown come over after one of the shows, sit at the bar, and watch gay porn on his laptop...in his clown costume.

If I knew you were working that night I would have come by and said hello!

I guess the long holiday weekends suck if you work in retail or a restaurant. I've never quite understood the rationale behind some of the big Labor/Columbus/Presidents/etc. Day giant, blowout, extended hours sales.

Last weekend, my wife and I went out to look for a new bed. The salesman went on about how they were having a huge Labor Day sale, 10% off everything, plus they'd be open late all 3 days.

It's like I'm missing something here.

3-day weekend --> ????? --> Spend $2k on a mattress. Labor Day makes me think of cookouts and swimming and tossing a frisbee around, not a doorbuster special at Penney's.

Labor Weekend for me means working long hours and making no money. The Circus always comes to town this weekend, which means that, instead of waiting on my normal bar guests, I end up making lots of chocolate milk for the little kids. If I do get the privilege of waiting on an adult, it's usually one of the circus performers who doesn't speak a word of english. A couple years ago, we actually had a clown come over after one of the shows, sit at the bar, and watch gay porn on his laptop...in his clown costume. Not exactly the kind of thing we want in a family restaurant.

On top of it, I'd really just love to have a job where I don't have to work on Labor Day. It seems to miss the entire point of the holiday. This is one of my life goals: to have a job where I don't have to work on national holidays. I don't think that's asking a lot.

Oh well, just one more day to go until the circus is over (it would probably bother me less if the circus didn't last 5 whole days!).

As long as you're in retail or the service industry you will be bound to work these holidays. I know my brother is in retail and it's fucked up our hang out schedule over the years.

I just think it's hilarious that Americans had to take another day to celebrate Labour Day instead of doing it in the right date, which was actually chosen to remember the struggles of workers' in the US: May the First.

Meh, as long as I get a day off out of it, I'll take it whenever. Plus it fits well in September. A nice long weekend as summer winds down, and it fills the vacation void between the 4th and Columbus Day.
