I finally watched The Princess Bride

I have been a fan of the movie Stardust since I first saw it. I'm not usually too big on romance movies, but I thought that Stardust was a very charming movie, with a nice mix of humor and adventure. When reading articles or online discussions about Stardust, I would frequently see it compared to a movie called The Princess Bride. A movie that apparently had quite the cult following.

Yesterday I finally decided to give it a try. I thought it was pretty good overall but didn't quite live up to the hype. I thought that everything from the beginning of the movie up to the fire swamp was excellent, but after that I felt that the movie for some reason wasn't as engaging. I think the movies strong point, much like Stardust, is the sense of light hearted fun and adventure. I can definitely see why the two movies are compared.

Not a bad fantasy adventure by any means, and I am glad I gave it a try. And now I will know what people are talking about when they quote stuff like, "Hello. My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die.".

Oh, and I'm not sure why, but I thought the following clip was the funniest part of the movie:

Classic. I think it's one of those films that's definitely better if you saw it close to when it came out and repeat viewings certainly don't hurt.

On this board the most quoted lines are (I'll let someone else finish it, for the full force of TBBSness):

Inconceivable

^^^ You keep using that word.

I do not think it means what you think it means.

It would be hard for any movie to live up to The Princess Bride's hype - but wait a year and then watch it again. It is one of those rare comedies that becomes funnier and funnier the more you see and the more you quote it. And it is a comedy, couched in a romantic/ action/ adventure setting - but in truth it's all about the wit.

We recently watched it on our lunch hours at work in order to show it to my boss who has a very quirky sense of humor and somehow had never managed to see it. For the rest of us it was repeat viewings and we all agreed at the end that it holds up tremendously well even though several of us had seen it a dozen times or more.

As for my favorite line:

"Life is pain. Anyone who says differently is selling something."

"You fool! You fell victim to one of the classic blunders! The most famous is never get involved in a land war in Asia, but only slightly less well-known is this: never go in against a Sicilian when death is on the line! Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha! Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha! Ha ha ha... ack."

It also has the longest swordfight in movie history IIRC...
I don't know if it is the longest, but I thought the sword choreography during the fight between Westley and Inigo was really excellent.

I just recently figured out that Vizzini is Grand Nagus Zek.
Yeah, I kept thinking his voice sounded familiar but I couldn't place it until I went to IMDB.

Wallace Shawn has done a great many roles.

Okay, this was just totally cosmically weird - but after I logged off reading this forum Sunday, I found my wife in her craft room watching Stardust. I told her OMG, someone on TBBS, was just talking about this movie and how it made him want to watch Princess Bride. After a couple of minutes, she said "Now I want to watch Princess Bride after this!"

I've always thought it had the best quotes, comparable in number to Airplane! or Spaceballs without sinking to the inane stupidity of either. It's clever, light-hearted, and funny and it grows on you as you watch it again and again. That alone sets it apart as I HATE to re-watch most movies-but this? This I will re-watch.
And I have a t-shirt w/a red and white convention name tag that reads:

HELLO

My name is Inigo Montoya, you kill my father, prepare to die

I love to wear it in public places for the double-takes.....

"Well, I wouldn't want to build a summer home here, but the trees are really quite lovely."

"Stop that rhyming, I mean it!"
"Anybody want a peanut?"
"Gaah!"

"I'm on the Brute Squad."
"You are the Brute Squad."

I saw it for the first time myself in college and was pretty underwhelmed by it. I mean it was good but it wasn't amazing.

I agree that the movie peaks early, then falls off a bit, though there are a few more classic moments at the end.

Still, I wish more movies like this were made. It's fun, it's clever, and it has a memorable script.

This. The movie has some genuinely unpleasant/dark stuff in Westley's treatment of Buttercup, really old school grim fairy tale beats, as well as some pretty weird twists (the framing story, Westley's death, etc.) that might be somewhat off-putting the first time through; all the more reason, therefore, to come back to it later, and try it again.
