I fell asleep while watching TMP yesterday

I dropped off right after Ilia-the-probe came out of the shower. I woke up again when the intrepid heroes were walking off the lip of the saucer, heading towards the V'Ger Light in the distance.

Funny thing was, I don't think I missed much.

Carry on.

You shouldn't have stayed up late partying the night before. You missed the Ilia probe being examined by the good doctors on the medical staff, and the Spock Walk.

TMP used to put me to sleep all the time. I could never make it through the whole thing without nodding off.

That all changed, however, when I started watching the Director's Cut.

I hate the Director's Cut. Between it and the Theatrical cut, I'll pick the theatrical cut every time.

Really wish we could get the Special Longer Version on Blu-ray.

Sounds about right.

I would prefer a Blu-Ray set that had all 3 versions included. All 3 versions remastered, cleaned up, and with the DE effects redone in high definition. There are things from all 3 versions I like, and things I dislike. For me there is not yet a definitive version.

The only movie I've nodded off whilst watching was 2001: A Space Odyssey. Compared to that TMP is an all-out action movie

I tried to see 1989's Batman twice when it was in theaters. Both times, dozed off and woke up in the middle of the bell tower climax. It's the only film to do that to me.

I had recurrent insomnia when I was in my thirties, and the two things I used to help lull myself to sleep were videos of Trek - either TOS or TMP.

The content was so completely familiar to me by that point that they functioned as background noise that wouldn't arouse any curiosity about what was onscreen.

Don't feel bad, I fell asleep through some too :)

I have no doubt there are a lot of us who are guilty of this.

I've only seen 2001: A Space Odyssey in a theater once. In San Francisco they had a showing in I think 2001. I'd seen it plenty of times on the small screen, but wanted to see it once on a big screen. Probably would have been better had the theater's sound system be up to the task.

2001 held my interest as the mystery of it all not only fueled the main plot, but there was interesting resistance for characters to discuss much about it, lending another layer of the unknown. Still, the film was clear that something significant was in the air, and the script paid off in a great way.

The problem with TMP is that is was not a new concept--it was following an extremely well known TV series (even to those who never considered themselves fans), so the wealth of characterizations, best episodes, and overall tone built a massive set of expectations for the film. Unfortunately, none were not met, other than the curiosity of seeing the crew reunited in a new visual era.

Instead of acting as a natural evolution of all TOS established, TMP took off in a direction that was best served for some other kind of sci-fi production, as it lacked the spirit and colorful, earthy heart of what made ST work.

I have to disagree on this. The entirety of TOS dealt with Spock's two parts contending with each other. TMP shows that contention having come to a fever pitch and then resolved. There is no movie that comes close to being a more natural extension of TOS.

If it can be faulted for anything, it is that it didn't do the same for Kirk. It merely used his obsession with command as a vehicle to get the story going. We never learned anything about why he was the way he was. No other movie ever tried to do that - except the first Abrams film. And while I didn't like Abrams' take on that question, at least it tried.

But of course at heart, TMP is a Spock story. The tale of an entirely logical super entity seeking out its human creator so parallels Spock's trials with his mother's human ancestry that if we didn't know the history of the TMP story we'd be tempted to think it had been created specifically to serve the need of resolving his fate. I daresay his death in TWoK doesn't come close to being as important. After all, everyone dies. But not everyone gets the answers they spend a lifetime seeking.

I can't stay awake during TUC. The moment the assassination attempt is complete, I usually lapse into a deep coma. I never fall asleep during TMP. Even though it is slow, there is just so much detail to soak up.

Which assassination attempt? There are two, and the first is successful, and therefore not a mere 'attempt'.

The boarding of Kronos One. Obviously that's what I meant, otherwise my comment makes no sense in this context. so, I'm assuming you decided to be a nitpicky jackarse for some reason?
