"I can't believe I kissed you!" "Must have been your lifelong ambition!"

About this particularly humorous exchange in ST VI: TUC, was this bit of dialogue written as a dig at William Shatner's enormously huge ego he had at the time? Because it really seems on the nose. And if so, kudos to William for going along with it and showing he wasn't afraid of making fun of himself.

Btw, about Shatner, it's heartwarming to know that he's a much nicer guy these days. I heard that sometimes he will go down to the Trek museum (I forgot what city it is in) just to hang around there for fun to look at all of the Trek memorabilia and other people there go up to him to say hi and he treats them as though they were long time friends! The Shatner of the 90's would never have been that humble!

I've never known for certain whether it was completely a Kirk-only bit of dialogue jabbing or if Shatner as an actor was intentionally included as an in-joke. Either way, it never fails to crack me up.

You mean the set tour? I'm sure he's paid for every appearance.

It's Nick Meyer, so it's almost definitely a stab at both Kirk and Shatner.

Nick had his share of first hand experience dealing with Shatner's ego (I have no compunctions against pointing out, since I stopped defending the shat decades ago).

Sources, please?

Wrath of Khan director's cut version DVD commentary for starters.

I’ll check it out.

I have “View From the Bridge”, but I haven’t read it in years. I never read anything in there that indicated Shatner was an ass to Meyer or that Meyer was put off by Shatner’s ego, at least any more than any other director dealing with a lead / star actor.

I’ll be interested to see what the indications are that Meyer had difficulties due to Shatner’s ego.

Shatner's ego was only outmatched by his overacting.:D

That line still cracks me up, even after what must be my 1000th viewing of that movie. It's definitely Kirk saying "I can't believe I kissed you!" and Martia following up with "must have been your lifelong ambition," because at least to me that makes the most sense, as she can see the Captain is most definitely a bit struck on himself.

Regardless, Bill has had no problem poking at himself and the fandom itself for a while, the SNL "Get a life" comment comes to mind. He poked fun at himself in STV, too, the mountain climbing scene, the "must have been those marsh melons" turboshaft scene (a big favorite of mine), and so on. He always seems up for some light fun like that.

Yes Chris Pine does something similar in his SNL episode but it falls flat just as the whole reverse role Wrath Of Khan In "Into Darkness" .

Oh, I loved Into Darkness. It's my 4th favorite Star Trek movie, partly because I'm a huge fan of Benedictine Camerapouch.

Of course the real Kirk is the one who said "I can't believe I kissed you." Look at the delivery, and who is saying which lines after fake Kirk gets up after being struck by real Kirk. Fake Kirk has this somewhat comical evil glee going on, whereas real Kirk is somewhat dumfounded.
