Hyperion Movie?

I have just watched the girlfriend read Fall of Hyperion, and again reminded myself how incredibly awesome the Hyperion books are. Then I clicked through the internets, and found some old posts saying Bradley Cooper is writing a screenplay () or that the guy from Day the Earth Stood Still remake is directing. So is anything coming out of anything?

Also is a Hyperion movie doable AT ALL? The stories in the first one, the 8 or so different threads in the second one, then the huge timejump between the second and the third, also the large number of characters and complex plots are all things that make this story unfilmable on any smaller scale than say LOTR. (Hell, they tried Golden Compass, which is way less complex than Hyperion, and see how that turned out)

A few years back I would have wished for a Dune-style miniseries, but nowadays I'm more inclined to wish for a Game of Thrones style 10 eps cable series (1 season/book). GoT already does the "only use certain actors for certain episodes" thing, has a relatively huge budget, etc. Hyperion even has a few "adult parts" that can be spiced up to HBO level without destroying the story... After all the historical and fantasy series recently, is a big budget scifi series doable?

There are talks about Hyperion movie/movies every few years but nothing comes out of it. I haven't heard the Bradley Cooper rumour, but the last one I've heard, IIRC, was about Wolfgang Petersen directing and DiCaprio starring as Raul Endymion, I think it was in 2004 or thereabouts.

I would prefer GoT-style series on HBO, but it will require a much larger budget, with all the special effects it requires.

I would love to see movies or a tv show made, the Hyperion books are fantastic. I like the Endymion books too, although they seem to be less popular.

The last thing I heard about it was from Bradley Cooper, almost a year ago.

What about Hyperion?

We are just finishing the deal to write that so that’s going ahead. If you haven’t read the books then they’re fantastic. Oh my God! Ideally we’d like to do them all but we’re actually combining them because it’s kind of a mammoth undertaking, these four books, to consolidate and turn them into script form.
The first one, we’re going to write two scripts, so the first is kind of a combination of Hyperion and the Fall of Hyperion and Endymion, which is three out of the four, and then we’ll see where that takes us in terms of the second one.

Are you still keen to direct it?

It’s a dream! But that’s like saying you want your first movie to be Avatar! I’d have to have NZT and give it to the studio head in order for them to let me direct that movie.
