A US woman is in a critical condition after her estranged husband told police he accidentally shot her while they were having sex.
Timothy Havens, 38, told police he was reaching for something on the bedside table when the pistol went off, hitting his estranged wife Carolyn in the chest, US news channel WLWT reported.
"[The gun was] right beside the bed. I picked it up and put it off to the side. We were having sex and it went off," he can be heard saying on the emergency 911 call soon after the incident.
Carolyn Havens, 42, was in a critical condition at a hospital in Dayton, Ohio.

Clearly not performing safe sex then.

It sound like he was having sex, while she was getting raped at gunpoint, until he lost control of the trigger.

how odd that they were in the middle of a divorce and she had a restraining order against him...

"accidentally" indeed.

This bring to mind The Man Who Fell to Earth for anyone else?

Yeah, full frontal Bowie...

I see it wouldn't be the first time he'd assaulted her.

Seriously, what the hell was she doing in the same house, let alone the same bed as him? Did he coerce her into it? I'd really like to hear the wife's side of this when she's able to talk.

Also this reminds me of one time I got seriously pissed off at a guy I was dating...he picked me up one night when I was drunk and we went back to his place, and I woke up the next morning and noticed a gun on his nightstand, right next to where I had been sleeping. I kind of poked it and went, "Is this real?"
"Yeah."
"Is it loaded?"
"Yeah."
"Uh, and you didn't think it might have been a good idea to put it out of reach of the drunk girl that was going to come over and sleep in this spot?"

He didn't have an answer. I can't even describe how angry I was at this.

She/they could have a kinky gun fetish of some sort. This sure seems like foul play, though. It's good that she lived at least.

Reading that the fist thing I thought was "I took over the previous electorate when he, very sadly, accidently brutally cut his head off while combing his hair."

Bit of a reach to lie about that with all the crime solving toys we have available today. If he just watched one episode of CSI...

Well I was all set to come in here and make a joke about the being blown away by the sex then I read this part:

Timothy Havens was arrested after it emerged Carolyn Havens had a civil protection order against him, the Springfield News Sun said.
He had previously spent 60 days in jail for assaulting his wife and been ordered to attend anger management classes, WLWT said.

It looks like rape at gunpoint and there's nothing funny about that.

If they did, I would hope they'd have been bright enough to unload the gun first before using it that way.

I'd say stj has it right - he was raping her at gunpoint and it went off on him, so he came up with this extremely lame and transparent story to keep from getting hauled off to jail right away for attempted murder.

Angry at him?

You were the drunk one - placing yourself in a position so irresponsibly (both position as in "state of mind" as well as in "next to a loaded gun") is ultimately your fault. He could've been a little less negligent, sure - but you were just downright irresponsible.

Why should it be his responsibility to clean up after your mess? Sounds like the fault was yours, not his.

What? He wasn't cleaning up after my mess. He called me, he knew perfectly well I was drunk, and he was sober, and he still wanted me to come over. If you are aware that you have a child coming over, you wouldn't leave a loaded gun out. Same goes for drunks. I don't hand my drunk friends big sharp knives when they come over. I'm not saying I won't take responsibility for being drunk. I've always been responsible for what I do when I'm drunk. But you'd think it'd just be common sense on the part of a sober human being to keep loaded guns away from drunk people. I was completely unaware that he even owned a gun.

I hope a neighbor heard a shot and thought to look at the time so they can compare how long it took him to make the 9-1-1 call from when the shot occurred. Not likely though.

If he was genuinely concerned for her life, he would have called almost immediately, but if he had intended to kill her with the one shot (hard to say you accidentally shot twice, so he wouldn't do that) or if it had gone off accidentally while raping her, I would expect him to have waited a while before calling to see if she was likely to die. Only after it became apparent that she wasn't going to die quickly might he have considered coming up with the accidental shooting story.

When they say the bullet entered her chest, I'm curious if they mean straight on from the front or more to the side of her body, because it would be very strange to be able to shoot her straight in the chest from the bedside table while having sex, unless they were doing it side by side.

It's entirely possible this was an accident and they had genuinely gotten back together despite him being a scumbag abuser (happens all the time unfortunately), but there's too much weirdness about the circumstances not to jump to the conclusion that it was probably murder or an accidental shooting while committing rape at gunpoint.
