Paul Bettany (born 27 May 1971) is an English actor who has starred as a wide range of characters in several diverse film genres. He has been nominated for BAFTA- and Screen Actors' Guild Awards as well as numerous critics and film circle awards.

At 6'3", this blonde, blue-eyed actor is known for striking appearance and beautiful voice. His most popular films include A Knight's Tale, Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World, and The Da Vinci Code. He also recently provided the voice of Jarvis in the hit film Ironman. He was recently announced as the lead in the upcoming vampire film, Priest.

After the success of his film American hit, A Knight's Tale, He received critical acclaim, including winning the London Critics Circle Award for British Supporting Actor. After the movie wrapped, director Brian Helgeland, determined that Hollywood should recognize Bettany's talent, showed the audition tape to many of his peers, including Ron Howard, who promptly cast Bettany in A Beautiful Mind. It was on that set that Bettany would befriend Russell Crowe and meet his future wife, Jennifer Connelly. Bettany's next major project saw him starring alongside Russell Crowe in Peter Weir's Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World. His portrayal of surgeon and naturalist Stephen Maturin brought in more critical acclaim, including a BAFTA nomination, British Actor of the Year (London Critics Circle), and Best Actor (Evening Standard). (from Wiki)

On June 28, 2004, Bettany and thirteen other actors were included in the 2004 invitation to join the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

Dogville and The Reckoning were released in limited cinemas in 2004. In September of that year, Bettany made his leading-man debut in Wimbledon, a romantic comedy. The film's cast would also introduce him to Jon Favreau, playing his manager, a relationship that would return when Favreau cast him as the voice of Jarvis in Iron Man. In spring 2005, Bettany went to Vancouver to film Firewall, a thriller starring Harrison Ford.Later that year, he went on to star as the murderous monk in The Da Vinci Code.

His most recent films include The Secret Life of Bees, the yet-unreleased Creation, in which he plays Charles Darwin, and the soon-to-be released horror/action film, Legion.

Thumbs up. He's not my usual type, but he's awesome. Master and Commander is my favorite movie...but Paul plays evil well too (Da Vinci Code, anyone?). Jennifer Connolly is a lucky, lucky lady.

Yeah! Thumbs up. I'm not really sure what it is about him that I find attractive, but I've liked him ever since I saw him in A Beautiful Mind.

Oh yeah baby! :techman:  I'm usually more into dark men, but he is really hot. Not only is he handsome, but he has a great presence.

That's not true. Paul Bettany was the leading man in the excellent British crime drama Gangster No. 1 (2000), which the article above completely ignores. Pay no attention to the 3rd billing - he was the lead, and only billed behind Malcolm McDowell (who played an older version of his character, and had much less screentime) and David Thewlis (playing the second lead) because he was less famous than those two. That was the first time I ever saw Bettany, and I was really impressed. He blew everyone else off the screen - even McDowell's performance came as a disappointment after Bettany's.

I haven't seen Da Vinci code (and I'm not too interested in watching it), but if you want to see Bettany play evil, watch Gangster No. 1 (see above). His character is as evil as a human being can get, violent, sociopathic and unlikeable, but somehow Bettany is really compelling, has a great presence and is even disturbingly hot. It seemed that the character was inspired by Alex De Large, therefore the casting of McDowell, and Bettany's character reminds one of a (taller and better-looking version of) young McDowell, but in this movie, he was better at being McDowell than McDowell himself was.

^But I wouldn't describe him as the "leading man" for that film--as in, he didn't get top-billing. That went to Malcolm McDowell. Plus, hardly anyone saw it--especially here in the States. But Paul did receive a lot of critical acclaim for that role--which lead to him being cast in the bigger-budget productions.

Ick. Too white. :rommie:
A susprising attitude for someone with your avatar.. and screen name. :cardie: :rommie:

I would. McDowell got comparatively little screen time, Bettany played the Gangster in most of the movie. Top billing will often go to a more famous actor rather than a less known one, even if he/she is not a lead. If I am not mistaken, Marlon Brando had the top billing for Superman, with Christopher Reeve being billed 3rd behind him and Gene Hackman - now would you say that Brando was the lead and Reeve was a supporting actor?

Unsure. Like the Inkheart photo with the long hair otherwise I get a neat, blonde Boris Becker vibe. Like Boris Becker, not so keen on blonde. This is going to be a sideways.

He definitely looks better with dark hair, although it occurs to me that he would make a good Ed Straker in a UFO revival. His looks appear to get better with age, and I like the pic of him with his little pet. :rommie:

I've never seen him in anything, but I'll give him a Thumbs Up.

I thought Becker was a redhead (admittedly, a rather fair-haired redhead). And I think a quite hot redhead (not when he was too young, mind you - he was a geeky teenager, but he grew up into an attractive man). I'm usually attacted to dark men, but there are exceptions.

Bettany looks like a redhead in at least a few of the photos, doesn't he?

Gotta give him a thumbs down in looks. He's not ugly or anything like that, but he's too pale and washed-out looking. He might be a fine, fine actor (the only thing I've seen him in, as far as I can remember, is A Beautiful Mind), but as for sex appeal...

...although my opinion, I imagine, might change if I saw him in something in which he's supposed to be sexy...

...Anyway, let's just say that there are better looking guys here in my office building, and this office building isn't exactly Hunk Central.

By the way, any volunteers and/or suggestions for the next HOTW are greatly appreciated.

And they do NOT have to be genre. It is better, though, if they have more than one thing on their résumé; that way at someone will know who the dude is. I will listen to any and all suggestions. I don't promise I'll actually use them, but I will listen. If you want to a thread yourself, just let me know.

Isn't he also in "Creation"...?

And why the frak am I even *in* this thread...!?

^ Yes, he was, as I stated in BOLD in the OP.

I don't know; why ARE you in this thread?

Any volunteers or suggestions? If not, I'll try to get another thread up sometime Thursday or Friday.

 YES! YES! YES! YES! YES! YES! YES! YES! YES! YES! YES! YES! YES! YES! YES! YES! YES! YES! YES! YES! YES! YES! YES! YES! YES! YES! YES! YES! YES! YES! YES! YES! YES! YES! YES! YES! YES! YES! YES! YES! YES! YES! YES! YES! YES! YES! YES! YES! YES! YES!

I am insanely busy lately, so don't assume this is me volunteering, but...

Have we done Mark Lenard? I did a search and didn't find him, but that doesn't mean I haven't missed something.
