Hulu's new player

A beaker full of death

The new player is dreadful. Hulu was the one flash-based service that played smoothly in full screen. It really used to be just like watching tv. Not anymore. Now it’s as jerky in full screen on my 8gb RAM, 5MB/s machine is if I were watching it on a 250 mb RAM laptop.

isnt Hulu now asking you to pay for this service?

No. Hulu is still free. The five trailing episodes as normal were going to be free, but they were going to charge $10 a month for access to older episodes. That's been delayed.

I like the new player...I've actually found it loads faster.

Huh. Well, I AM watching it on a laptop, and last night I watched the two latest episodes of The Simpson's through the new player, and for me it was a huge improvement. It loads much faster, and the show doesn't lock up every few minutes anymore. The old player was so jerky that I couldn't watch in full screen. Now I can.

At least until they start charging for it. Then I'm outta there.

Seems to be better tonight. Maybe they fixed this problem?
I love that Hulu has old shows I love, like I Spy, Alfred Hitchcock Presents (and Hour), Night Gallery...

Hulu is still very jerky for me, and has a tendency to lock up a couple of times during a show. It's very frustrating, because there are a lot of old shows on there that I'd like to see again.

I watched The Simpsons Season Finale the other night and it performed just fine, although I do find the new commercial format a little more annoying, but compared to network and cable TV, it's still preferable.

Overall I like the new player. It has problems with occasionally freezing. I've had issues with the "Press ESC to exit Full Screen..." message refusing to disappear, or the top and bottom bars refusing to go away (no matter where I "dock" the cursor), but overall, it's been a lovely improvement. I especially appreciate the screen grabs in the status bar now, as well as the ability to "yes/no" a commercial from within full screen mode. Still not convinced the "yes/no" is really accomplishing anything, but I keep trying. I would gladly watch 100 car commercials if I never have to see another one about STDs, condoms, birth control, or athropomorphized beer bottles ever again. ;)

I wonder how long it takes for the commercial tailoring to kick in? I've been yes/no-ing for a couple weeks and I'm still getting the exact same commercials. I DON'T USE NAIR!

^^ That's because I keep clicking on the "Mike Farley Loves Nair" option.

Flash player sucks, it seems pretty unlikely that a Hulu update is going to make it worse. They're not in control the part that makes it slow and horrible.

It doesn't seem to be any better or worse for me. The only difference I've come across is that the first commercial always fails to load.

I've got a kickass system so I haven't had problems with hulu; that's why these problems with he new player really threw me. Seems to be ok now, though.
